Article Abstract

The thermosalient effect is a rarely observed, potentially very useful and at the present, unpredictable mechanical response during a phase transition that is thought to hold the potential for rapid and clean energy conversion devoid of gaseous products. Here, we report the serendipitous discovery of a rare instance of a thermosalient organic solid that exhibits the effect below room temperature. The crystals of this carbazole-based material are dynamic at both molecular and macroscopic scales. Using variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction and variable-temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR), we thoroughly examined the hysteretic structural transition in this material, emphasizing its macroscopic reconfigurability. We discovered unexpected large-amplitude molecular oscillations in the low-temperature phase, which challenge conventional assumptions about salient materials. Notably, we combined H ssNMR with computational modeling to reveal this dual-scale dynamism, setting the groundwork for advancements in energy-efficient actuators, sensors, and intelligent materials. This work might open new avenues for developing crystalline materials that can be implemented in innovative devices operating seamlessly across various scales.

Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters globally. Understanding its propagation mechanisms and the causal relationships among different drought types is crucial for effective monitoring and mitigation. Using meteorological (SPI), hydrological (SRI), and agricultural (SSMI) drought indices from 1983 to 2023 in Xinjiang, this study employs the Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM) method to systematically quantify nonlinear causal relationships among the three drought types, revealing their temporal lag characteristics, spatial heterogeneity, and multiscale dynamics.

Developing high-performance wearable flexible sensors that can adapt well to complex environments has become a hotspot. Herein, a polyvinyl alcohol based composite hydrogel sensor with high mechanical strength, desirable frost/swelling resistance, and highly sensitive sensing performance was proposed by a multi-component collaborative design strategy. Meanwhile, an intelligent gesture recognition system was established by combining machine learning algorithm.

One of the most important puzzles in atmospheric chemistry is the long-lifetime of HO˙ in spite of its low-stabilization energy. In the present work, we have estimated the lifetime of HO˙ using classical dynamics simulations by coupling an available neural-network analytical potential energy surface with a chemical dynamics program. The simulation results clearly indicate that at room temperature, the lifetime of HO˙ can exceed 1 μs under collision-free conditions.

Hydrogen energy is pivotal for driving sustainable development and achieving deep decarbonization; yet, its storage remains a significant challenge. Notably, depleted methane reservoirs can serve as a promising large-scale solution for underground hydrogen storage (UHS). Based on adsorption experiments, Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics methods, the adsorption behavior of H and CH in anthracite and the applicability of five models were discussed.

Mordenite ((Ca,Na,K)AlSiO·7HO) is a natural and synthetic nanoporous zeolite containing several channels of different sizes in its structure. Because of this, its structure provides an important opportunity to study the relationship between confined and ultraconfined water as these channels have sizes between those typical of these water environments. In this study, the properties of water molecules in these environments were analyzed using inelastic and quasielastic neutron spectroscopy of a natural mordenite.
