In this study, the structural characterization and neuroprotective effects of two Gastrodia elata Blume polysaccharides (GEP-1 and GEP-2) were investigated. GEP-1 and GEP-2, with molecular weights (Mws) of 3.698 kDa and 59.612 kDa, respectively, mainly comprised glucose. Methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses indicated that the structure of GEP-1 was based on →4)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → and →4,6)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, with α-D-Glcp-(1 → and →6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → as the side chains. The main chain of GEP-2 was →4)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →4,6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → and →3,4)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, and α-D-Glcp-(1 → and →6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → were the side chains. Both GEPs ameliorated copper exposure-induced HT-22 cell damage by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation. A comprehensive analysis revealed that the biological activity of GEP-2 was superior to that of GEP-1; this was related to its higher Mw, monosaccharide composition, type of glycosidic bonds, a greater degree of branching, and spatial conformation of GEP-2. These results provide new evidence for the neuroprotective effects of G. elata Blume polysaccharides against heavy metal exposure.

Blume is an important medicinal orchid, yet its large-scale cultivation is increasingly threatened by fungal diseases. The 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL) gene family directs a key step in phenylpropanoid metabolism and plant defence, but its composition and function in have not been investigated. Background: Epilepsy is a serious recurrent neurological dysfunction, and its incidence is increasing sharply, often causing social dysfunction in patients and causing heavy economic and caregiving burdens to families and society. At present, most drugs used in the clinical treatment of epilepsy have serious side effects, such as liver and kidney function damage, psychological and physiological damage, and drug dependence.
Methods: The antiepileptic effect of gastrodin (GAS, a natural compound isolated from Gastrodia elata Blume) was studied in a PTZ-induced epilepsy rat model.

Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB) is a potential medicinal and edible plant with several active components and pharmacological activity that has a high application value in medicine and the food business. However, in natural conditions, GEB seed has a very low germination rate and depends on two specific fungi, germinal and nutritive fungi, to complete the germination process and growth. Armillaria mellea, while acting as a nutrient supplier, actually inhibits the germination of GEB seeds.
