Degenerative disk disease (DDD) is a progressive condition that occurs when the intervertebral discs (IVDs), which act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, degenerate or wear out. Due to this degeneration process, the mechanical properties of the IVD, providing flexibility between adjacent vertebrae, can change. Thus, assessing these mechanical properties may improve diagnosis and treatment guidance for DDD. In this article, we tested in vivo multifrequency magnetic resonance elastography (MMRE) of the human IVD in identifying progressively DDD in three asymptomatic male volunteers aged 32, 50, and 60 years. MMRE of the lumbar spine was acquired using a dual-actuator setup and operated at four frequencies from 60 to 90 Hz. MMRE data were postprocessed using multifrequency wave-number recovery (k-MDEV) inversion algorithm. The resulting shear wave speed (SWS) values were used as a surrogate parameter of tissue stiffness and then compared to Pfirrmann grading (Pf) of disc degeneration (1-5) performed by an experienced MRI spine researcher. Morphological Pf demonstrated an inverse relationship between increasing IVD stiffness and progressive IVD degeneration by a Spearman's rank correlation coefficient of = -0.792, < 0.001. MMRE allows measurement of in vivo mechanical properties of IVDs and may provide additional information in disc degeneration beyond standard morphological changes. Prior to the clinical use of this technique, future studies should be conducted to evaluate the reproducibility and repeatability of spinal MMRE in the spine, and particularly its potential confounders.

It is anticipated that wide-bandgap semiconductors (WBGSs) would be useful materials for energy production and storage. A well-synthesized, yet scarcely explored, diamond-like quaternary semiconductor LiZnGeS has been considered for this work. Herein, we have employed two well-known functionals GGA and mGGA within a framework of density functional theory (DFT).

MoSe nanosheet/Si heterojunction photodetectors were fabricated by a mechanical exfoliation method, and their electrical and optical properties at different temperatures were investigated. It was found that the MoSe nanosheet/Si heterojunction device exhibited excellent rectification characteristics at room temperature, and the rectification ratio gradually decreased with the decrease of temperature. The temperature-dependent electrical properties of the MoSe/Si heterojunction device were actually caused by the inhomogeneity of the potential barrier.

Hydrated magnesium sulfates (MgSO·HO) are known to form multiple hydration states ( = 0-11) and are essential in planetary science and thermochemical energy storage. Despite their significance in detecting extraterrestrial water reservoirs or in mineral (de)hydration cycles, it is still necessary to understand how the structure-property relationships of these materials evolve at different hydration levels when pressure is applied. Through a systematic first-principles computational investigation, we elucidate the key structural factors governing the densification mechanism under hydrostatic pressure of MgSO·HO crystals.

Microfluidic devices offer more accurate fluid flow control and lower reagent use for uniform nanoparticle synthesis than batch synthesis. Here, we propose a microfluidic device that synthesizes uniform iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) for highly efficient intracellular delivery. The 3D-printed device was fabricated, comprising two inlets in the T-shaped channel with an inner diameter of 2 mm, followed by a helical mixing channel with a single outlet.

To expand the application scope of carbon steel, imparting superhydrophobicity to its surface offers an effective strategy to overcome its inherently poor corrosion resistance. However, in marine environments, conventional superhydrophobic coatings often suffer from limited mechanical durability and inadequate long-term corrosion protection. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic bilayer coating composed of PDMS-MWCNTs (top layer) and PDMS (bottom layer) was developed to address these challenges.
