Introduction: The effect of muscle glycogen stores on performance during intense short-duration exercises in humans is unclear. We hypothesized that low initial muscle glycogen levels would impair constant-load intense one-legged knee extensor exercise lasting approximately 5 min and human muscle contractile function, as determined by maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), electrically induced single-twitch maximal force, rate of force development (RFD), and rate of relaxation. Furthermore, alter phosphorylation of the Na/K-ATPase (NKA) regulatory proteins AMPK and FXYD1 indicating attenuated NKA activity.

Social network analysis offers a high-resolution framework for understanding social influences on alcohol use, but full-length assessments confer significant burden, giving rise to brief measures. However, few studies have empirically compared brief and full-length assessments. To address this, the present study examined the internal and external validity of both brief and full egocentric social network assessments and their ability to capture weak social ties.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the seventh most common cancer worldwide, with rising incidence particularly in oropharyngeal cancer subsites. Despite well-known risk factors, such as tobacco and alcohol consumption as well as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, most HNCs are diagnosed at an advanced stage, resulting in poor prognosis. Early detection and screening are critical, especially in high-risk populations.

Triggered by advances in atomic-layer exfoliation and growth techniques, along with the identification of a wide range of extraordinary physical properties in self-standing films consisting of one or a few atomic layers, two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and other van der Waals (vdW) crystals now constitute a broad research field expanding in multiple directions through the combination of layer stacking and twisting, nanofabrication, surface-science methods, and integration into nanostructured environments. Photonics encompasses a multidisciplinary subset of those directions, where 2D materials contribute remarkable nonlinearities, long-lived and ultraconfined polaritons, strong excitons, topological and chiral effects, susceptibility to external stimuli, accessibility, robustness, and a completely new range of photonic materials based on layer stacking, gating, and the formation of moiré patterns. These properties are being leveraged to develop applications in electro-optical modulation, light emission and detection, imaging and metasurfaces, integrated optics, sensing, and quantum physics across a broad spectral range extending from the far-infrared to the ultraviolet, as well as enabling hybridization with spin and momentum textures of electronic band structures and magnetic degrees of freedom.

Ionic polymeric carbon nitrides, poly(heptazine imides) (PHIs), have emerged as promising photocatalysts, yet the relationship between their structure, exciton dynamics, and activity has remained elusive so far. Here, a direct link is established between photocatalytic activity, spectroscopic properties, and theoretical analysis of structural effects on exciton behavior in water-soluble PHIs with different cations. Using steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy alongside ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy performed in the absence and presence of hole and electron quenchers, two distinct excitonic relaxation pathways are uncovered: sub-100 ps decay dominated by exciton recombination and shallow-trap states, and sub-ns dynamics associated with deep-trap assisted recombination.
