Article Abstract

In forensic identification, there are many cases of hair poisoning detection and analysis to assist forensic identification, with fewer reported cases using morphological features to assist forensic identification. Herein, we report the case of a 13-year-old girl who had been raped and killed. The body was abandoned in a snowy wilderness and was discovered 5 months later. After an on-site investigation and forensic examination, the case conformed to the characteristics of a homicide, and a strand of hair left on the deceased's scarf became key evidence. Through morphological methods such as stereomicroscopy, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, we believe that the hair conformed to the morphological and histological characteristics of pubic hair, which helped clarify the case. Based on this case, we believe that the morphological characteristics of hair are of great significance for forensic identification and that rich morphological observation methods can enhance the evidential value of hair in forensic cases.

Forensic identification at fire scenes faces three core challenges: distinguishing cause of death (antemortem burning versus postmortem corpse burning), reconstructing criminal behavior (arson versus accident), and preserving evidence (thermal destruction versus artificial tampering). This case study systematically demonstrates the application value of burn trace characteristics in arson investigation through a typical intentional homicide and corpse burning case. Based on a three-dimensional analytical framework of human burn-behavioral characteristics, a systematic pathway incorporating reconstruction of arson/corpse burning processes and identification of body relocation behavior was established.

Exploring the Frontiers of Technology in Forensic Psychiatric Youth Care: Ethical Challenges.

Technologies such as virtual reality, wearables, and mobile apps have the potential to improve forensic psychiatric treatment of youths. Meanwhile, these technological advancements have given rise to new, complex ethical challenges. Paying attention to ethics is especially relevant in forensic psychiatric youth settings because of the often coercive context of treatment and the vulnerable patient population.

This study presents a medico-legal case study of an infant who died as a result of intestinal volvulus, a rare but severe complication secondary to the ingestion of multiple magnets and button batteries. The mutual attraction of magnets through adjacent intestinal loops, compounded by the corrosive effects of button batteries, can precipitate rapid and irreversible damage to the gastrointestinal wall. A comprehensive review of the literature on documented pediatric cases involving the ingestion of magnets and button batteries was undertaken to compare the spectrum and frequency of complications.

Environmental stress contributes to the development of depression through neuro-immune interactions, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms and associated clinical diagnostic biomarkers remain unclear. We established a psychosocial stress mouse model and systematically investigated the immune dysregulation induced by stress through integrated analysis of blood cell profiles, leukocyte transcriptomics, protein-protein interaction networks, single-cell RNA sequencing, and targeted pharmacological intervention. Additionally, we constructed and validated a depression predictive model using multiparametric peripheral blood data and machine learning, and assessed feature importance using the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis.

Printing paper represents one of the most prevalent forms of physical evidence in document forensics, where accurate brand and model identification provides critical investigative leads. To enable rapid, precise identification of commercial printing paper brands, we propose a novel method combining 3D fluorescence spectroscopy with an enhanced ResNet34 network. First, 3D fluorescence contour maps of diverse paper brands were acquired across excitation (280-420 nm) and emission (300-592 nm) wavelengths.
