Background: Sarcopenia is associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, whether changes in sarcopenia status affect CVD risk remains unclear. In addition, how indoor fuel use impacts the sarcopenia transition process is less well studied.

Rationale: Inflammation is central to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pathogenesis but incompletely represented in COPD prognostic models. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a readily available inflammatory biomarker.

Objectives: To explore the associations of NLR with smoking status, clinical features of COPD, and future adverse outcomes.

Independent evolutionary deterioration of the oxygen-transport system in Asian noodlefishes and Antarctic icefishes.

Determination of evolutionary mechanisms underlying innovative traits is crucial for understanding the vast diversity of species and phenotypes. Given their respiratory physiologies, fishes are compelling subjects for evolutionary analysis of the hemoprotein-based oxygen-transport systems. Asian noodlefishes (Osmeriformes: Salangidae) and Antarctic icefishes (Notothenioidei: Channichthyidae) are examples of fish clades that generally do not express myoglobin or hemoglobin.

Translational coupling of neighboring genes in prokaryotes.

J Bacteriol

Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health, Albany, New York, USA.

Prokaryotic genomes are gene-dense, so genes in the same orientation are often separated by short intergenic sequences or even overlap. Many mechanisms of regulation depend on open reading frames (ORFs) being spatially close to one another. Here, we describe one such mechanism, translational coupling, where translation of one gene promotes translation of a co-oriented neighboring gene.

Nitrogen leaching is a major pathway of nitrogen fertilizer loss. Although arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are known to reduce nitrogen leaching by improving plant nitrogen uptake, the soil-based mechanisms remain unclear. A pot experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design, with four nitrogen levels (0, 3.
