Background/aims: Despite medical advances in recent decades, the mortality rate of advanced liver cirrhosis remains high. Although liver transplantation remains the most effective treatment, candidate selection is limited by donor availability and alcohol abstinence requirements. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BM-MSC) transplantation has shown promise for the treatment of advanced cirrhosis.

Introduction: Since only around 10% of people with gambling disorder (GD) seek professional treatment or attend self-help groups, multiple strategies are needed to improve this rate. The proposal of the Behavioral Addictions Centre 'Adcom' (Madrid, Spain) is one of these strategies, a pioneering and innovative program aimed at the general population to identify people with addictions such as GD, in an attempt tp offer them appropriate evidence-based treatments.
Materials And Methods: We analyzed information obtained from the first 305 adults who voluntarily sought attention at Adcom for self-referred gambling, and conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study of this population.

Purpose: We estimated the association between maternal sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and the risk of specific birth defects among live singleton births in the United States (US).
Methods: We conducted a population-based study using data from birth certificates for 14,602,822 live singleton births occurring from 2016 to 2019 in the US. We used logistic regression to estimate the associations between three maternal STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis) and the risk of four specific birth defects (gastroschisis, cleft lip with or without cleft palate, spina bifida, and hypospadias), adjusting for socio-demographic and pregnancy-related factors.

Background: Evidence on the role of herpes-zoster (shingles) vaccination in reducing stroke risk is inconsistent and limited, particularly concerning intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We aimed to examine the association between zoster live vaccine (ZVL) and overall stroke, as well as its main subtypes.
Methods: We conducted a population-based nested case-control study using the database of Israel's largest healthcare provider.

Background: Advanced glycation end-products result from chemical modification of proteins under conditions of hyperglycemia or oxidative stress common with advancing age. Advanced glycation end-product (AGE) formation alters vascular and cardiac structure and function, yet the prospective associations of circulating AGEs with heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) have not been studied.
Methods: We evaluated the associations of serum N-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML), a major AGE in tissue proteins, and incident HF and AF in the CHS (Cardiovascular Health Study), a population-based cohort of older adults.
