Anisotropic particles have a wide range of applications in materials science such as emulsion stabilization, oil-water separation, and catalysis due to their asymmetric structure and properties. Nevertheless, designing and synthesizing large quantities of anisotropic particles with controlled morphologies continue to present considerable challenges. In this study, we successfully synthesized anisotropic microspheres using a soap-free seed emulsion polymerization method. This approach combines the benefits of seed emulsion polymerization with emulsion interfacial polymerization. By varying the concentrations of dissolved polymeric monomers, 3-methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS), and the initiator of potassium persulfate (KPS), different shapes of bowl, cap, and three-sided concave particles were obtained in surfactant-free aqueous solutions, simplifying the post-treatment process. The cap particles are Janus particles with good emulsion stability to toluene/water emulsions over 30 days. The catalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was investigated after loading silver nanoparticles on the surface of the particles by in situ deposition. The anisotropic particles obtained in this work have potential applications in emulsion stabilization and catalysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has highlighted the critical need for safe and effective vaccines. In this study, subunit nanovaccine formulations were developed using the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein encapsulated in polymeric nanoparticles composed of poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL). Two surfactants, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium cholate (SC), were evaluated during formulation via a modified water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) emulsion-solvent evaporation method.

The NRF2/KEAP1 signaling pathway regulates the gene expression of numerous cytoprotective and detoxifying enzymes and is therefore essential for maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. Despite the increasing knowledge of NRF2 signaling complexity, dimethyl fumarate remains the sole NRF2-targeting therapy in clinical practice, used for multiple sclerosis. Ongoing research exploring the role of NRF2 in cancer, neurodegeneration, diabetes, and cardiovascular, renal, and liver diseases holds significant promise for future therapeutic innovation.

Gum Arabic (GA), a naturally occurring polysaccharide, has emerged as a promising biomaterial for drug delivery systems (DDS) due to its high water solubility, emulsifying capacity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Its structural richness in arabinogalactan facilitates strong interactions with biomolecules, enabling the development of various drug formulations including hydrogels, nanoparticles, liposomes, and emulsions. GA-based DDS have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, protecting bioactive compounds from degradation, and enabling sustained and controlled drug release.

Environmentally friendly food packaging has emerged as a viable strategy to replace traditional plastic films. In this study, eugenol Pickering emulsion was constructed with konjac glucomannan (KGM) and tragacanth gum (GT) as stabilizers, and was introduced into the KGM/chitosan (CS) composite film by electrostatic action to develop a new type of active packaging film. Interfacial characterization revealed optimal emulsion stability at a 1:5 KGM-to-GT mass ratio.

The polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil are prone to oxidation and have poor dispersibility, which limits their use in the food sector. In this work, oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by chitin nanocrystals (ChNC) were prepared via high-speed homogenization. Anionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was assembled onto cationic ChNC-stabilized emulsion droplet surfaces via layer-by-layer self-assembly technology to construct ChNC/CMC (Ch-C) bilayer emulsions with rigid inner layer and flexible outer shell structures.
