The global health implications of fine particulate matter (PM) underscore the imperative need for research into its toxicity and chemical composition. In this study, zebrafish embryos exposed to the water-soluble components of PM from two cities (Harbin and Hangzhou) with differences in air quality, underwent microscopic examination to identify primary target organs. The Harbin PM induced dose-dependent organ malformation in zebrafish, indicating a higher level of toxicity than that of the Hangzhou sample. Harbin PM led to severe deformities such as pericardial edema and a high mortality rate, while the Hangzhou sample exhibited hepatotoxicity, causing delayed yolk sac absorption. The experimental determination of PM constituents was followed by the application of four algorithms for predictive toxicological assessment. The random forest algorithm correctly predicted each of the effect classes and showed the best performance, suggesting that zebrafish malformation rates were strongly correlated with water-soluble components of PM. Feature selection identified the water-soluble ions F and Cl and metallic elements Al, K, Mn, and Be as potential key components affecting zebrafish development. This study provides new insights into the developmental toxicity of PM and offers a new approach for predicting and exploring the health effects of PM.

Objective: To evaluate whether pretreatment strategies targeting the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as DNase I and low-frequency ultrasound, enhance the efficacy of successive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against Candida albicans biofilms and to assess the effects on biofilm components.
Methods: Forty-eight-hour C. albicans (ATCC 90028) biofilms were treated under four conditions: (I) aPDT [Photodithazine (PDZ) (25 mg/L) for 20 min + Light-Emitting Diode (LED) (660 nm, 18 J/cm²)], (II) DNase+aPDT [5 min with 20 U/mL DNase I before aPDT], (III) sonication+aPDT [7 W, 170-190 J before aPDT], (IV) Dn+So+aPDT.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses significant challenges in conventional antibiotic treatments for chronic wound infections, highlighting an urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. To address this issue, we developed a multifunctional electrospun nanofiber dressing co-loaded with anthocyanin (ATH) and asiaticoside (AS) that possesses antimicrobial activity. The tri-layer dressing contains three functional components: a hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile-anthocyanin (PAN-ATH) layer for pH monitoring, a hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) layer for exudate management, and a water-soluble pullulan-Bletilla striata polysaccharide-asiaticoside (PUL-BSP-AS) layer.

Despite being rich in bioactive compounds, Jiuzao of light flavor Baijiu (LFB) remains an underutilized by-product due to limited systematic characterization of its components and lack of efficient valorization strategies. In this study, widely targeted metabolomics was used to comprehensively analyze the water-soluble metabolites in the enzymatic hydrolysate (JEH) and water extract (JWE) of Jiuzao from LFB, and 1869 metabolites (with 887 novel compounds) were identified, including 128 bioactive compounds from traditional Chinese medicine and 95 functional peptides. JEH exhibited superior anti-glycation and antioxidant activities, with inhibition rates of 66.

Gum Arabic (GA), a naturally occurring polysaccharide, has emerged as a promising biomaterial for drug delivery systems (DDS) due to its high water solubility, emulsifying capacity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Its structural richness in arabinogalactan facilitates strong interactions with biomolecules, enabling the development of various drug formulations including hydrogels, nanoparticles, liposomes, and emulsions. GA-based DDS have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, protecting bioactive compounds from degradation, and enabling sustained and controlled drug release.

Background: Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 µm (PM) is a heterogeneous mixture, and specific substances that affect cardiovascular events remain unknown. We aimed to examine the association of short-term exposure to PM and its components with hospital admissions for acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
