Article Abstract

Zeolites are important classes of crystalline materials and possess well-defined channels and cages with molecular dimensions. They have been extensively employed as heterogeneous catalysts and gas adsorbents due to their relatively large specific surface areas, high pore volumes, compositional flexibility, definite acidity, and hydrothermal stability. The zeolite synthesis normally undergoes high-temperature hydrothermal treatments with a relatively long crystallization time, which exhibits low synthesis efficiency and high energy consumption. Various strategies, ., modulation of the synthesis gel compositions, employment of special silica/aluminum sources, addition of seeds, fluoride, hydroxyl (·OH) free radical initiators, and organic additives, regulation of the crystallization conditions, development of new approaches, etc., have been developed to overcome these obstacles. And, these achievements make prominent contributions to the topic of acceleration of the zeolite crystallization and promote the fundamental understanding of the zeolite formation mechanism. However, there is a lack of the comprehensive summary and analysis on them. Herein, we provide an overview of the recent achievements, highlight the significant progress in the past decades on the developments of novel and remarkable strategies to accelerate the crystallization of zeolites, and basically divide them into three main types, i.e., chemical methods, physical methods, and the derived new approaches. The principles/acceleration mechanisms, effectiveness, versatility, and degree of reality for the corresponding approaches are thoroughly discussed and summarized. Finally, the rational design of the prospective strategies for the fast synthesis of zeolites is commented on and envisioned. The information gathered here is expected to provide solid guidance for developing a more effective route to improve the zeolite crystallization and obtain the functional zeolite-based materials with more shortened durations and lowered cost and further promote their applications.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) offer exceptional energy density and output voltage. However, their practical application remains hindered by sluggish ion transport and uncontrolled lithium dendrite formation, particularly under fast-charging conditions. Here, we report a facet-engineered anion-regulating separator based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with preferentially crystal-exposed (110) facets.

A multi-modal platform enabling simultaneous impedance spectroscopy and X-ray scattering is presented. When applied to zeolite crystallization, four-electrode impedance measurements reliably track bulk crystallization kinetics in agreement with X-ray diffraction, while two-electrode impedance data reveal artefacts from electrode passivation.

Livestock and poultry farming effluents (LPFE) have become a significant source of pollution in the agricultural water environment, with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) being the major pollutants. The use of inexpensive Mg2+ -modified materials as crystallization carriers can enhance the struvite crystallization and precipitation reaction, enabling efficient recovery of N and P nutrients from LPFE. In this study, Mg2+ -modified corncob biochar (CCBC-Mg) and Mg2+ -modified natural zeolite (NZ-Mg) were assessed for their simultaneous recovery of N and P from LPFE.

Enhanced Mass Transport of One-Dimensional Zeolite MTT by Secondary Growth.

One-dimensional zeolites have distinct pore topologies for shape-selective catalysis, yet their performance in conventional reactions is frequently compromised by severe diffusion limitations. Creating opportunities to employ one-dimensional (1D) zeolites in catalytic applications requires advanced synthesis methods to design materials with ultrasmall diffusion path lengths. In this study, we show that the postsynthesis modification of ZSM-23 (MTT) using a protocol analogous to the generation of finned zeolites dramatically improves its mass transport properties.

Zeolites and zeolite-like materials with unique pore structures have emerged as key functional materials in diverse fields such as the chemical industry, environmental protection, and energy, owing to their high selectivity, excellent catalytic performance, robust stability, and multifunctionality. In this study, two germanate compounds with distinct cage-like architectures were successfully synthesized through the rational design of rigid imidazole-based templates, specifically using 3-methyl-1-phenyl-1-imidazol-3-ium and 3-propyl-1-phenyl-1-imidazol-3-ium as organic structure-directing agents (SDAs). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the two germanates crystallize in the tetragonal 4/ and trigonal 3̄ space groups, respectively.
