Article Abstract

Invasive infections caused by (iGAS), commonly known as Group A Streptococcus, represent a significant public health concern due to their potential for rapid progression and life-threatening complications. Epidemiologically, invasive GAS infections exhibit a diverse global distribution, affecting individuals of all ages with varying predisposing factors. The pathogenesis of invasive GAS involves an array of virulence factors that contribute to tissue invasion, immune evasion, and systemic dissemination. In pediatrics, in the last few years, an increase in iGAS infections has been reported worldwide becoming a challenging disease to diagnose and treat promptly. This review highlights the current knowledge on pathogenesis, clinical presentations, and therapeutic approaches for iGAS in children.

Mean Airway Pressure-An Informative but Overlooked Indicator of Mechanical Power.

Crit Care Explor

September 2025

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN.

Mean airway pressure, a monitored variable continuously available on the modern ventilator, is the pressure measured at the airway opening averaged over the time needed to complete the entire respiratory cycle. Mean airway pressure is well recognized to connect three key physiologic processes in mechanical ventilation: physical stretch, cardiovascular dynamics, and pulmonary gas exchange. Although other parameters currently employed in adults to determine "safe" ventilation are undoubtedly valuable for daily practice, all have limitations for continuous monitoring of ventilation hazard.

Non-invasive bladder cancer detection: Identification of a urinary volatile biomarker panel using GC-MS metabolomics and machine learning.

Talanta

August 2025

Associate Laboratory i4HB - Institute for Health and Bioeconomy, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal; UCIBIO - Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit, Laboratory of Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. Electronic address:

Early detection of bladder cancer (BC) remains a major clinical challenge due to the limitations of current diagnostic methods, which are often invasive, expensive, or insufficiently sensitive, particularly for early-stage disease. Metabolomics approaches, when integrated with machine learning (ML) techniques, offer a powerful platform for identifying novel, non-invasive biomarkers. In this study, urinary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analysed from 87 BC patients and 90 age- and sex-matched cancer-free controls using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS).

Non-invasive PCO monitoring during polysomnography: transcutaneous versus end-tidal measurement.

Sleep Breath

September 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Ajou University School of Medicine, 164 Worldcup Street, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, 16499, Korea.

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to monitor transcutaneous and end-tidal partial pressures of CO simultaneously during polysomnography, determine the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and identify relevant factors that can affect the results.

Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 55 adults who underwent polysomnography at the Ajou University Hospital Sleep Center between February 2021 and September 2022. They were volunteers who spontaneously breathed room air.

Current clinical treatments for intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation (e.g., discectomy) often lead to re-herniation, and tissue engineering scaffolds for annulus fibrosus (AF) regeneration remain scarce, particularly those capable of mimicking the multilayered structure of native AF.
