Article Abstract

Materials based on spin crossover (SCO) molecules have centered the attention in molecular magnetism for more than 40 years as they provide unique examples of multifunctional and stimuli-responsive materials, which can be then integrated into electronic devices to exploit their molecular bistability. This process often requires the preparation of thermally stable SCO molecules that can sublime and remain intact in contact with surfaces. However, the number of robust sublimable SCO molecules is still very scarce. Here, we report a novel example of this kind. It is based on a neutral iron(II) coordination complex formulated as [Fe(neoim)], where neoimH is the ionogenic ligand 2-(1-imidazol-2-yl)-9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline. In the first part, a comprehensive study, which covers the synthesis and magnetostructural characterization of the [Fe(neoim)] complex as a bulk microcrystalline material, is reported. Then, in the second part, we investigate the suitability of this material to form thin films through high-vacuum sublimation. Finally, the retainment of all present SCO capabilities in the bulk when the material is processed is thoroughly studied by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In particular, a very efficient and fast light-induced spin transition (LIESST effect) has been observed, even for ultrathin films of 15 nm.

The surface of photocatalysts plays a key role in the adsorption and activation of CO molecules. Establishing the conformational relationship between the crystalline phase of the photocatalysts and the CO reduction reaction (CORR) activity is crucial to understanding the catalytic reaction mechanism. Herein, we synthesized CdS catalysts with different exposed crystalline facets (CdS[100], CdS[001], and CdS[111]) using hydrothermal and water bath methods and evaluated their photocatalytic CORR performances.

A comprehensive analysis of physical and chemical properties using the same family of spin-crossover complexes is crucial for understanding and designing structure-property relationships. However, finding an appropriate system remains challenging. Here, a series of guest-saturated states based on the 2D Hofmann-type framework [Fe(prentrz)Pd(CN)]·guest (prentrz = (1,2)-3-phenyl--(4-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)prop-2-en-1-imine; 1·guest) is reported, exhibiting a guest-manipulated slow dynamic effect on spin equilibrium in an incomplete two-step spin-crossover (SCO) process.

Seven new mononuclear complexes [Fe(aqin)(NCS)] (1), [Fe(aqin)(NCSe)] (2), [Fe(aqin)(NCBH)] (3), [Fe(2-pic)(NCS)] (4), [Fe(2-pic)(NCSe)] (5), [Fe(2-pic)(NCBH)] (6), [Fe(tpa)(NCBH)] (7), [aqin = 8-aminoquinoline, 2-pic = 2-picolylamine, tpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine)] are investigated. Structurally, except for 3, which affords a trans-configuration, all the complexes adopt a cis-configuration. Their propensity to crystallize without any solvent molecules facilitates the study of the influence of the "pure" ligand on spin-crossover (SCO) characteristics.

Multi-step spin-crossover (SCO) materials, which exhibit multiple distinct spin states, are considered promising candidates for high-order data storage and multiple switches. However, such materials remain rare, necessitating the development of innovative design strategies. Here, we chose an inexpensive asymmetric ligand, 2-chloro-6-methylpyrazine (ClMepz), and synthesized two-dimensional (2D) Hofmann-type clathrates [Fe(ClMepz){M(CN)}]·ClMepz (M = Au (1), Ag (2)), in which ClMepz serves as a monodentate ligand and a guest molecule.

Transition metal spin-crossover (SCO) complexes with magnetic bistability show great promise as spin-switches for molecule-based devices. Using first-principles calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function technique, we explored the spin-resolved electronic and transport properties of photochromic Fe(II) SCO complexes in the high-spin state with the open-ring (HS-O) isomer and in the low-spin state with the closed-ring (LS-C) isomer, since the photocyclization and photocycloreversion between the HS-O and LS-C isomers can be reversibly realized under light radiation with different wavelengths at room temperature as in previous experiments. Our results clearly reveal that the examined Fe(II) SCO complexes with photochromic diarylethene-based ligands in the HS-O isomer have lower energy than the LS-C isomer of 0.
