Ouabain (OUA) is a cardiotonic steroid that modulates Na+, K+ -ATPase activity. OUA has been identified as an endogenous substance that is present in human plasma, and it has been shown to be associated with the response to acute stress in both animals and humans. Chronic stress is a major aggravating factor in psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety. The present work investigates the effects of the intermittent administration of OUA (1.8 μg/kg) during the chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) protocol in a rat's central nervous system (CNS). The results suggest that the intermittent OUA treatment reversed CUS-induced HPA axis hyperactivity through a reduction in (i) glucocorticoids levels, (ii) CRH-CRHR1 expression, and by decreasing neuroinflammation with a reduction in iNOS activity, without interfering with the expression of antioxidant enzymes. These changes in both the hypothalamus and hippocampus may reflect in the rapid extinction of aversive memory. The present data demonstrate the ability of OUA to modulate the HPA axis, as well as to revert CUS-induced long-term spatial memory deficits.

Insulin tolerance tests (ITTs), glucagon tests, and low or standard-dose adrenocorticotropic hormone tests are used to evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. While ITT is considered the gold standard test for stimulating both the cortisol and growth hormone axis, its use in young children carries a risk of hypoglycemia, making it potentially unsafe. Recent studies indicate that L-dopa stimulates the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol.

Objectives: To clarify the role of hippocampal glutamate system in regulating HPA axis in mediating the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at the heart meridian for improving myocardial injury in rats with acute myocardial ischemia (AMI).
Methods: Male SD rats were randomized into sham-operated group, AMI group, EA group, and L-glutamic acid+EA group (=9). Rat models of AMI were established by left descending coronary artery ligation, and EA was applied at the "Shenmen-Tongli" segment; the rats in L-glutamic acid+EA group were subjected to microinjection of L-glutamic acid into the bilateral hippocampus prior to AMI modeling and EA treatment.

Tinnitus, the auditory perception of sound without an external environmental stimulus, affects 15% of the human population and is associated with hearing loss. Interestingly, anxiety may be a significant risk factor in tinnitus pathophysiology potentially due to underlying common neural circuits of the auditory and limbic systems. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of stress-induced anxiety on tinnitus development in a rat model.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of beak trimming-using a hot blade or infrared radiation-on mortality, egg production, feather pecking, and corticosterone levels in laying hens, using systematic review-meta-analysis (SR-MA) methodology. A total of 1775 citations were identified. The number of birds evaluated was 76 for corticosterone, 6172 for mortality, and 5460 for egg production.

Aims: Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (II/R) injury predominantly causes acute lung injury (ALI), and in severe instances, acute respiratory distress syndrome, both associated with high mortality. Electroacupuncture (EA) excels in regulating autonomic nervous system balance and safeguarding organ function. This study delved into EA's impacts and mechanisms on II/R-induced ALI.
