Article Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the short-term functional and microstructural outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) without gas tamponade in lamellar macular holes (LH).

Materials And Methods: In this prospective case series, LH cases diagnosed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) underwent PPV with epiretinal membrane (ERM) removal and internal limiting membrane peeling without gas tamponade. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and OCT imaging preoperatively and 3 months after the surgery.

Results: Among 22 eyes, 10 degenerative (Deg) LH, 8 tractional (Trac) LH, and 4 mixed-type LH were assessed. After the surgery, anatomical closure occurred in 20 eyes (91%) without any significant difference between LH subgroups. Comparing preoperative and postoperative values, no significant changes was detected regarding BCVA neither totally ( = 0.5) nor in subgroups ( for Deg = 1.0, Trac = 0.71, Mix = 0.18). The overall central foveal thickness was increased significantly after surgery ( < 0.01), but in subgroup analysis, the increase was significant only for Trac LH ( = 0.02). The tractional LH eyes had less ellipsoid zone (EZ) disruptions compared to Deg or mixed subgroups before surgery. There were no changes in EZ integrity before and after the surgery. In regression analysis, no correlation was found between demographic or clinical characteristics and anatomical closure or BCVA improvement postoperatively.

Conclusion: PPV resulted in 91% anatomical closure of all cases of LH but without functional improvement in short-term. Further prospective clinical trials with larger sample size and longer follow-up would be required to confirm the clinical significance of these findings.

Temporary silicone oil tamponade for persistent macular holes: a multicentre study.

Br J Ophthalmol

September 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany

Background: Persistent full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs) following primary surgery represent a therapeutic challenge. Various surgical treatment approaches have been proposed. This study evaluates anatomical and functional outcomes of a temporary silicone oil tamponade in persistent FTMH in a larger cohort.

Unilateral cleft lip repair methods have evolved from straight-line repairs to geometric procedures, rotation-advancement, and contemporary hybrid techniques. The Fisher anatomical subunit repair is a versatile, effective, and highly reproducible technique. It utilizes mathematical precision in design, avoids multi-point closure, minimizes scar burden, and does not compromise horizontal lip length for vertical height in various deformities.

The introduction of autologous neurosensory retinal transplantation (ANRT) into vitreoretinal surgery has significantly improved the success rates of closure of refractory full-thickness macular holes (FTMH). In recent years, the technique has gained wide acceptance and its indications have expanded; however, certain aspects remain debatable - particularly the optimal graft size to ensure the best anatomical and functional outcomes. To address this issue, the study proposes a surgical technique for treating FTMH using ANRT that involves precise marking of the neurosensory retinal graft.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the factors influencing refractive error following Phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation (PE + IOL) in patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), providing a theoretical basis for preoperative consultation and IOL power selection in clinical practice.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 404 PACG patients from Shenzhen Eye Hospital between 2019 and 2024. Preoperative ocular biometric parameters and combined surgical approaches were evaluated using Spearman correlation, multinomial logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

Objective: To examine the safety and effectiveness of non-inverted ILM Free Flap combined with the SPOT technique (Sub-Perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) injection of Ocular viscoelastic device (OVD) Technique) in the treatment of unclosed macular holes (MHs).

Design: Retrospective interventional case series.

Participants: Eight patients (8 eyes) with persistent unclosed MHs were treated at a tertiary eye hospital in China from September 2023 to February 2025.
