Article Abstract

Blue-Phase Liquid Crystals (BPLCs) are considered to be excellent 3D photonic crystals and have attracted a great deal of attention due to their great potential for advanced applications in a wide range of fields including self-assembling tunable photonic crystals and fast-response displays. BPLCs exhibit promise in patterned applications due to their sub-millisecond response time, three-dimensional cubic structure, macroscopic optical isotropy and high contrast ratio. The diversity of patterned applications developed based on BPLCs has attracted much attention. This paper focuses on the latest advances in blue-phase (BP) materials, including applications in patterned microscopy, electric field driving, handwriting driving, optical writing and inkjet printing. The paper concludes with future challenges and opportunities for BP materials, providing important insights into the subsequent development of BP.

ConspectusMultifunctional integrated molecules are increasingly pivotal in various cutting-edge fields including materials science, nanotechnology, and biomedicine. Among these molecules, chiral fluorescent photoswitches (CFPSs) are a class of functional organic molecules that seamlessly integrate chiral, fluorescent, and photoresponsive characteristics. These properties, when combined, allow for a fascinating array of variations in chirality and fluorescence due to the structural changes induced by photoisomerization.

Blue phase liquid crystal elastomers (BPLCEs) hold significant promise for flexible photonic devices due to their 3D periodic photonic lattices and intrinsic soft-matter characteristics. However, achieving an optimal balance between mechanical resilience and dynamic responsiveness remains a critical challenge. This study introduces a dynamic hydrogen-bonding network design strategy, wherein N,N'-bisacryloylcystamine monomers are incorporated to construct a hierarchical energy dissipation system, yielding BPLCEs with remarkable toughness (1.

The use of blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) in spatial light modulators (SLMs) offer advantages over traditional nematic LCs due to their polarization-independent behavior. We demonstrate a simplified reflection-mode setup similar to liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) technology to evaluate BPLC performance. Using a vertical field switching (VFS) reflective cell with pure BPLC, we achieve phase modulation without complex cell fabrication methods typically needed for BPLCs in VFS configurations.

We report on direct microscopic observations of thermally driven fluctuating dynamics in a narrow temperature region between the isotropic and low-temperature phases in achiral, chiral, and strongly chiral (blue phase) liquid crystal materials. We observe the dynamics in samples strongly confined between two glass surfaces which act as disordering surfaces at thicknesses above the critical confinement thickness below which the phase transition is gradual. In achiral and long-pitch chiral materials the fluctuating appears as formation and disappearance of small structureless nematic domains, whereas in strongly chiral materials, which exhibit blue phase I at larger thicknesses, these fluctuations are real-time formation and annihilation of topologically nontrivial nematic half-skyrmions.

An electric field-based orientation method for blue phase (BP) liquid crystals (LCs) enables particularly high-quality orientation and determines the BPI orientation by applying an out-of-plane electric field in a planar alignment cell. However, the mechanism, including the role of field-induced phases like BPX in BPI lattice reorientation, remains unclear. This study systematically investigates the role of BPX in BPI reorientation under various electric field conditions and alignment layer characteristics.
