Article Abstract

Biomass valorization is essential, particularly in emerging countries. Here, hydrochar from arabica coffee straw was functionalized with a triazole group (HD-TRz) for use as a support of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs-HD-TRz) applied in the Ullmann coupling reaction for the first time. It provided remarkably excellent selectivities, conversions at a temperature as low as 45 °C and catalyst recyclability, surpassing previous literature performances. Hydrochar was obtained by one-pot reaction via hydrothermal synthesis, using NaOH solution as activating agent and functionalized with a 1,3-triazole group by CuAAC "click" reaction. The PdNPs were prepared via reduction of hydrochar-bound Pd(II) using NaBH. Hydrochar functionalization was monitored by infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) allowed to observe carbon and palladium planes in hydrochar and PdNPs HD-TRz structures. The PdNPs presented a spherical shape with 2.1 ± 0.1 nm size, homogeneously distributed in the carbon coverslips. The HD-TRz-supported PdNPs were used as a catalyst in the Ullmann reaction of iodobenzene, using ethanol as solvent with 100% of conversion and 91% selectivity at 45 °C. The material was reused, presenting 100% of conversion and selectivities of 92, 84 and 73% for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle, respectively. The scope of the reaction was expanded to other molecules showing the potential of this and other triazole-hydrochar-supported nanocatalysts.

Objectives: There is limited information on the use of organs from HIV-positive donors (HIV D+) for HIV-positive recipients (HIV R+) in Europe. In some countries the use of HIV D+ organs is prohibited by law. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of Spanish kidney and liver transplant (KT/LT) teams towards HIV D+/R+ KT/LT through a nationwide survey, and to evaluate the current situation across Europe regarding legislation and reported cases.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) impacts significantly the quality of life of people aged over 65 years old, while millions more suffer from other types of dementia, yet no effective drugs exist. The few approved drugs in this area address mostly the associated symptoms, while several selective agents acting on promising targets have failed in clinical trials. The complexity of neurodegenerative diseases has prompted multitargeting ligands as the new paradigm, where more than one biological mechanism may be perturbed synergistically.

A Review of On-Surface Synthesis and Characterization of Macrocycles.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

School of Physics and Information Technology, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an 710119, China.

Macrocyclic organic nanostructures have emerged as crucial components of functional supramolecular materials owing to their unique structural and chemical features, such as their distinctive "infinite" cyclic topology and tunable topology-dependent properties, attracting significant recent attention. However, the controlled synthesis of macrocyclic compounds with well-defined compositions and geometries remains a formidable challenge. On-surface synthesis, capable of constructing nanostructures with atomic precision on various substrates, has become a frontier technique for exploring novel macrocyclic architectures.

Ullmann-type coupling reactions are one of the most important transformations in organic synthesis. Achieving catalyst-free Ullmann couplings under mild conditions is crucial to extending the scope of traditional carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom couplings. Herein, we show that Ullmann couplings can be effectively achieved at room temperature without the need for metal catalysts in MeOH/HO microdroplets.

The synthesis of thiosugar-ferrocene conjugates through Ullmann-type coupling is reported. The method provides access to compounds showing direct attachment of the thiol to the ferrocene, a type of molecule of which only one example had previously been reported. This methodology, which has been extended to other thiols (alkyl, (hetero)aryl), enables products to be obtained in excellent yields under relatively mild operating conditions.
