Article Abstract

Recently, the bismuth-based (Bi-based) Z-scheme photocatalysts have been paid great attention due to their good solar energy utilization capacity, the high separation rate of their photogenerated hole-electron pairs, and strong redox ability. They are considerably more promising materials than single semiconductors for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental deterioration by efficiently utilizing sunlight to motivate various photocatalytic reactions for energy production and pollutant removal. In this review, the traits and recent research progress of Bi-based semiconductors and recent achievements in the synthesis methods of Bi-based direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are explored. The recent photocatalytic applications development of Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts in environmental pollutants removal and detection, water splitting, CO reduction, and air (NO) purification are also described concisely. The challenges and future perspective in the studies of Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are discussed and summarized in the conclusion of this mini review.

Antibiotics are emerging organic pollutants that have attracted huge attention owing to their abundant use and associated ecological threats. The aim of this study is to develop and use photocatalysts to degrade antibiotics, including tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and amoxicillin (AMOX). Therefore, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction composite of g-CN (gCN) and 3D flower-like BiWO (BW) perovskite structure was designed and developed, namely BiWO/g-CN (BW/gCN), which can degrade low-concentration of antibiotics in aquatic environments under visible light.

Acetaminophen is a representative contaminant of emerging persistent organic pollutants that can cause environmental problems when it enters municipal wastewater. An innovative flower-like Z-scheme photocatalyst Bi-BiOI/UiO 66 heterojunction composite was designed and constructed via a one-step solvothermal method. Investigations demonstrated that the Z-scheme structure strongly contributes to increasing the degradation efficiency of micropollutants.

Constructing visible-light driven semiconductor heterojunction with high redox bifunctional characteristics is a promising approach to deal with the increasingly serious environmental pollution problems, especially the coexistence of organic/heavy metal pollutants. Herein, a simple in-situ interfacial engineering strategy for the fabrication of 0D/3D hierarchical BiWO@CoO (BWO) heterojunction with an intimate contact interface was successfully developed. The superior photocatalytic property was reflected not only in individual tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) oxidation or Cr(VI) reduction, but also in their simultaneous redox reaction, which could be predominantly attributed to the outstanding light-harvesting, high carrier separation efficiency and enough redox potentials.

Inspired by nature, it has been considered an effective approach to design artificial photosynthetic system by fabricating Z-scheme photocatalysts to eliminate environmental issues and alleviate the global energy crisis. However, the development of low cost, environment-friendly, and high-efficient photocatalysts by utilizing solar energy still confronts huge challenge. Herein, we constructed a Bi O /(BiO) CO /Bi MoO ternary heterojunction via a facile solvothermal method and calcination approach and used it as a photocatalyst for the degradation of phenol.

Semiconductor photocatalysis is thought to be a viable solution for addressing the growing problem of environmental pollution. Bismuth (Bi) metal oxides can function as a direct plasmonic photocatalyst or cocatalyst to accelerate the photogenerated charge separation and thus improve their photocatalytic activity. Hence, Bi-based photocatalysts have received a lot of attention due to their extensive environmental applications, including pollutant remediation and energy concepts.
