Proteins are essential for life in all organisms: they mediate cell signaling and cell division and provide structure/motility to cells and tissues. All proteins are synthesized on cytoplasmic ribosomes as unfolded precursors that need to find their correct location in the compartmentalized cell. In eukaryotes, ∼30% of the proteome is translocated across or integrated into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane, a process mostly mediated by the heterotrimeric Sec61 complex that spans the ER membrane.

The Drosophila peripheral nerve contains multiple layers of glial cells and an overlying extracellular matrix, which together support neuronal survival and function. The innermost glial layer, the wrapping glia (WG), ensheathes axons and facilitates action potential conduction. Recent work has identified involvement of laminin, a heterotrimeric extracellular matrix protein complex in WG development.

Production of recombinant human leukocyte antigen class I (HLA-I) proteins in vitro is fundamental for molecular immunology. However, HLA-I protein refolding has remained inefficient due to challenges in the assembling of the trimolecular complex. Here, we compare various in vitro refolding methods that address the challenges of intrachain disulfide bond formation and assembly of the complex between the light and heavy chains in the presence of the target peptide.

Current treatments of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) largely depend on anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive strategies with unacceptable efficacy and adverse events. Resolution or repair agents to treat IBD are not available but potential targets like formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2/ALX) may fill the gap. In this study we evaluated the therapeutic effects of two small molecule FPR2/ALX modulators (agonist Quin-C1 and antagonist Quin-C7) against IBD.

The Neural Crest cells are multipotent progenitor cells formed at the neural plate border that differentiate and give rise to a wide range of cell types and organs. Directional migration of NC cells and their correct positioning at target sites are essential during embryonic development, and defects in these processes results in congenital diseases. The NC migration begins with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and extracellular matrix remodeling.
