Article Abstract

Encrustation of implanted urinary tract devices is associated with significant morbidity. Pellethane is a polyether-based compound noted for its strength, porosity, and resistance to solvents. We assessed Pellethane thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with and without surface coatings 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TETRA) for the potential to resist encrustation in an artificial urine environment. Samples of Pellethane TPU, HEMA Pellethane TPU, TETRA Pellethane TPU, and hydrogel-coated ureteral stent (Cook) were suspended in a batch-flow model with an artificial urine solution (AUS). Every 48 hours for 90 days, 40% of the solution was replaced with fresh AUS. All samples were stored in a 37C incubator. Subsequently, the samples were thoroughly dried for 48 hours before weighing. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the degree of encrustation. Nu-Attom Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the precise compositions of the encrustation specifically with regard to calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. At the conclusion of the 90-day trial, the samples were analyzed, and the average mass changes were as follows: stent 63.78%, uncoated Pellethane TPU 11.50%, HEMA-coated Pellethane TPU 2.90%, and TETRA-coated Pellethane TPU 0.60%. Pellethane TPU products, and specifically those coated with HEMA and TETRA, exhibited less average mass increase and a lesser propensity to form encrustation than the traditional urinary tract stent. The mass increases noted on coated Pellethane devices were primarily ionic, whereas that of the stent was not. Pellethane, particularly with an HEMA-based preventative coating, may serve as a favorable alternative to traditional urinary stent material, providing its improved resistance to encrustation.

Acidochromic fluorescent membranes have garnered significant research interest owing to their potential in real-time environmental monitoring and smart sensing applications. However, the rational design of membranes to optimize their structure-property interplay for enhanced acidochromic performance remains further explored. Herein, we prepared various stimulus-responsive micro/nanofibrous membranes using electrospinning technology by incorporating a fluorescent small molecule (TPECNPy-2) with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to obtain specific properties.

The primary consideration of a 4D printed bone scaffold is possessing good shape memory properties, followed by choosing an appropriate stimulation. Herein, polydopamine was coated on the surface of FeO to improve its distribution and dispersion in the 4D printed porous poly(L-lactic acid)/thermoplastic polyurethane (PLLA/TPU) composite bone scaffold, with enhanced magnetic-response shape memory properties. Specifically, the ratio of PLLA and TPU was optimized to 5:5, achieving optimal shape memory properties with a co-continuous structure.

The synthesis and optimization of antibacterial agents for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrices is highly imperative for the development of antibacterial TPUs, especially for applications in biomedical devices. Macromolecular or polymer-based antimicrobials are extremely appealing for their environmental compatibility, low toxicity toward host cells, and low-leachable characteristic, making them ideal additives for antibacterial materials. Herein, quaternary ammonium salt (QAS)-containing copolyesters of P(MBL-N-CL) were designed and synthesized as polymeric antimicrobials via ring-opening copolymerization (ROCP) of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (MBL) and ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) followed by selective post-functionalization via the thiol-ene "click" reaction to introduce cationic moieties.

Multifunctional wound dressings with rapid hemostasis, infection prevention, and tissue regeneration are crucial for treating hemorrhagic wounds. Inspired by the heterogeneous interfacial structure of natural skin, this study developed a chitosan(CS)-based Janus wound dressing with asymmetric wettability. The inner layer consists of methacrylated chitosan (CSMA), incorporating polydopamine-coated silica (PDA-SiO₂) nanoparticles to form a hydrophilic sponge with hemostatic, antioxidant, and pro-angiogenic properties.

Ultrasound (US) is a promising modality for wirelessly powering implantable devices, requiring encapsulated receivers to ensure long-term stability. Traditional hermetic packaging often limits acoustic transmission, making polymer-based encapsulation a more suitable alternative. This study investigates how implant-grade polymers, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), parylene-C, and medical-grade silicones (MED-1000 and MED2-4213), affect the receive performance of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs).
