The infrared (IR) inhibition of axonal activities in the crayfish neuromuscular preparation is studied using 2 µm IR light pulses with varying durations. The intracellular neuronal activities are monitored with two-electrode current clamp, while the IR-induced temperature changes are measured by the open patch technique simultaneously. It is demonstrated that the IR pulses can reversibly shape or block locally initiated action potentials. Suppression of the AP amplitude and duration and decrease in axonal excitability by IR pulses are quantitatively analyzed. While the AP amplitude and duration decrease similarly during IR illumination, it is discovered that the recovery of the AP duration after the IR pulses is slower than that of the AP amplitude. An IR-induced decrease in the input resistance (8.8%) is detected and discussed together with the temperature dependent changes in channel kinetics as contributing factors for the inhibition reported here.

Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells (ECFCs) are recognized as key vasculogenic progenitors in humans and serve as valuable liquid biopsies for diagnosing and studying vascular disorders. In a groundbreaking study, Anceschi et al. present a novel, integrative strategy that combines ECFCs loaded with gold nanorods (AuNRs) to enhance tumor radiosensitization through localized hyperthermia.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a well-established near-infrared dye which has been used clinically for several decades. Recently, it has been utilised for fluorescence-guided surgery in a range of solid cancer types, including sarcoma, with the aim of reducing the positive margin rate. The increased uptake and retention of ICG within tumours, compared with normal tissue, gives surgeons a visual reference to aid resection when viewed through a near-infrared camera.

Bone defect therapy frequently encounters bacterial infections and chronic inflammation, which impair bone regeneration and threaten implant stability. Iron oxide nanoparticles have attracted attention due to cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, and metabolic safety. However, iron oxide nanoparticles still struggle to balance low-temperature efficient antibacterial activity, effective immunomodulation, and bone regeneration.

The global rise in antibiotic resistance demands the urgent development of new antibacterial agents. This study investigated the antibacterial potential of four synthesized methoxy and thiophene chalcone derivatives (designated 3a, 4a, 3b, and 4b) against clinically relevant bacterial pathogens. These compounds were prepared through Claisen-Schmidt condensation, while their chemical structures were verified through applying Fourier-transform infrared, mass spectrometry, H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and C NMR.
