Determination of potassium level is one of the most frequent laboratory tests in clinical medicine. Hyperkalaemia is defined as a potassium level >5.0 mmol/L and is one of the most clinically important electrolyte abnormalities, because it may cause dangerous cardiac arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Here, we review methodological challenges in the determination of potassium levels, important clinical aspects of the potassium homoeostasis as well as of the pathophysiology of hyperkalaemia.

Neuroinflammation, a vital protective response for tissue homeostasis, becomes a detrimental force when chronic and dysregulated, driving neurological disorders like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. Potassium (K) channels maintain membrane potential and cellular excitability in neurons and glia within the intricate CNS signaling network. Neuronal injury or inflammation can disrupt K channel activity, leading to hyperexcitability and chronic pain.

Repeated exposure to gestational general anesthesia during pregnancy has been associated with neurodevelopmental damage and cognitive and social dysfunction in offspring. This study investigates the underlying mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for mitigating these effects. Behavioral tests revealed significant impairments in cognitive, social, and spatial learning abilities in the offspring of general anesthesia-treated mice, alongside delayed eye-opening, reduced body weight, and neuronal damage.

Hyperosmolality-triggered physiological drought hinders plant growth and development, leading to a drop in crop yields. Hyperosmolality triggers calcium signaling, and yet how osmotic-induced calcium signaling participates in cellular osmotic response remains enigmatic. To date, several Ca channels and transporters have been identified to regulate osmotic-induced calcium signal generation (CaSG) or Ca homeostasis.

Background: Overall, 75% of patients with acute stroke have elevated mean arterial pressure (MAP). In randomized stroke trials, the indirect NO donor glyceryl trinitrate lowered MAP but improved neither regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) nor functional outcomes. One probable reason is that the microcirculation cannot bioactivate glyceryl trinitrate.

Injuries to the central nervous system can disrupt body functions and often cause excessive sympathetic activity, leading to immune suppression known as central nervous system injury- associated immunodepression syndrome. The connection between central nervous system injury and central nervous system injury-associated immunodepression syndrome is not fully clear. Gammaaminobutyric acid, an important inhibitory neurotransmitter, helps excitation-inhibition balance in the nervous system, especially after spinal cord injuries.
