Article Abstract

Electron and proton microprobes, along with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis were used to study the microstructure of the contemporary Al-Cu-Li alloy AA2099-T8. In electron probe microanalysis, wavelength and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry were used in parallel with soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) to characterize the microstructure of AA2099-T8. The electron microprobe was able to identify five unique compositions for constituent intermetallic (IM) particles containing combinations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. A sixth IM type was found to be rich in Ti and B (suggesting TiB2), and a seventh IM type contained Si. EBSD patterns for the five constituent IM particles containing Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn indicated that they were isomorphous with four phases in the 2xxx series aluminium alloys including Al6(Fe, Mn), Al13(Fe, Mn)4 (two slightly different compositions), Al37Cu2Fe12 and Al7Cu2Fe. SXES revealed that Li was present in some constituent IM particles. Al SXES mapping revealed an Al-enriched (i.e., Cu, Li-depleted) zone in the grain boundary network. From the EBSD analysis, the kernel average misorientation map showed higher levels of localized misorientation in this region, suggesting greater deformation or stored energy. Proton-induced X-ray emission revealed banding of the TiB2 IM particles and Cu inter-band enrichment.

Nanogranular films obtained by the soft assembly of atomic clusters feature functional properties that are of interest in a variety of fields, ranging from gas sensing to neuromorphic computing, heterogeneous catalysis and the biomedical sector. Bimetallic nanogranular films, combining a post-transition metal (tin) and a catalytic metal (platinum), were produced using supersonic cluster beam deposition. By operating the cluster source with a double-rod cathode or sintered cathode configuration, completely different nanostructures were obtained.

Structurally ordered PtCo intermetallics are one of the most promising oxygen-reduction catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their intrinsically improved catalytic activity and stability relative to PtCo solid-solution alloys. However, increasing the heating temperature to achieve a desirable high degree of ordering results in severe particle agglomeration and low mass activity and stability. Herein, a two-step synthesis approach is developed to create an L1-PtCo intermetallic structure with an increased ordering degree and well-dispersed ultrafine particles.

Evaluation of the Impact of the LPBF Manufacturing Conditions on Microstructure and Corrosion Behaviour in 3.5 wt.% NaCl of the WE43 Magnesium Alloy.

Materials (Basel)

July 2025

Department of Applied Mathematics, Materials Science and Engineering and Electronics Technology, ESCET, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, 28933 Mostoles, Spain.

This work expands the processing window of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing of WE43 magnesium alloy by evaluating laser powers and scanning speeds up to 400 W and 1200 mm/s, and their effect on densification, microstructure, and electrochemical performance. Relative density of 99.9% was achieved for 300 W and 800 mm/s, showing that the use of high laser power is not a limitation for the manufacturing of Mg alloys, as has been usually considered.

Corrosion inhibition mechanisms of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole on AA2024 T3 aluminium alloy.

PSL University, CNRS-Chimie ParisTech, Institut de Recherche de Chimie Paris, Physical Chemistry of Surfaces Research Group, Paris, France.

The mechanisms of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) adsorption and corrosion inhibition on the aerospace AA2024 T3 aluminium alloy have been investigated using electrochemistry and advanced surface analyses. Electrochemical methods were used to measure the degree of corrosion protection in neutral chloride media, while advanced surface analysis techniques were employed to determine the interfacial interaction and inhibitor action mechanisms. It is shown that 2-MBT effectively inhibits corrosion of the alloy, reducing its susceptibility to corrosion attack and its corrosion rate.

PtCo intermetallic alloy nanoparticles are highly active and stable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), making them key materials for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. However, the high-temperature annealing required for ordering into the intermetallic phase often leads to particle growth. In this work, we developed a machine learning interatomic potential to model the disorder-to-order transition in PtCo-based ternary alloys with high accuracy and computational efficiency.
