Article Abstract

Background: Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) has been attributed to type IV, most likely delayed-type hypersensitivity response (adaptive immunity) but little is known on innate immunity, especially antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the disease. Abnormalities in AMP expression have been linked to pathological skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis.

Methods: Antimicrobial peptide profiling was carried out in PLE skin samples (n,12) compared with that of healthy (n,13), atopic (n,6), and psoriatic skin (n,6).

Results: Compared to healthy skin, we observed increased expression of psoriasin and RNAse7 (both mostly in stratum granulosum of the epidermis), HBD-2 (in the cellular infiltrate of the dermis), and LL37 (mostly in and around blood vessels and glands) in PLE lesional skin, a similar expression profile as present in psoriatic skin and different to that of AD (with little or no expression of psoriasin, RNAse7, HBD-2, and LL37). HBD-3 was downregulated in PLE compared to its high expression in the epidermis and dermis of healthy skin, AD, and psoriasis.

Conclusion: The unique profile of differentially expressed AMPs in PLE implies a role in the pathophysiology of the disease, possibly directly or indirectly linked to the microbiome of the skin.

Background: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is increasingly being incorporated into intervention studies to acquire a more fine-grained and ecologically valid assessment of change. The added utility of including relatively burdensome EMA measures in a clinical trial hinges on several psychometric assumptions, including that these measure are (1) reliable, (2) related to but not redundant with conventional self-report measures (convergent and discriminant validity), (3) sensitive to intervention-related change, and (4) associated with a clinically relevant criterion of improvement (criterion validity) above conventional self-report measures (incremental validity).

Reduced sleep irregularity does not impact peripheral vascular function before or following total sleep deprivation.

Consistent sleep patterns are associated with better cardiovascular health, while sleep loss is known to impair vascular function. This study examined whether consistent sleep could improve vascular function and mitigate the negative effect of 25-hour total sleep deprivation. Sixteen healthy adults (10 females, 6 males; 34 ± 9 years; BMI: 25 ± 3 kg/m²) completed a randomized crossover study involving two 12-night sleep conditions, habitual sleep and a consistent sleep/wake schedule that were separated by a 1-2-week washout.

Background: Foreign-born children may face greater barriers to accessing routine immunizations in Canada or their country of birth, but provincial surveillance data on immigration status are lacking. Using our provincial immunization repository linked to administrative data, we assessed immunization coverage among immigrant and refugee children in Ontario, Canada, compared with Ontario-born children and identified factors associated with being up-to-date (UTD).
