An inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometer (ICP-SFMS) was used to develop an analytical method for the fast determination of Na, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Y, Mo, Cd, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Pb in Arctic size-segregated aerosol samples (PM), after microwave acidic digestion. The ICP-SFMS was coupled with a microflow nebulizer and a desolvation system for the sample introduction, which reduced the isobaric interferences due to oxides and the required volume of sample solutions, compared to the usual nebulization chamber methods. With its very low limit of detection, and taking into account the level of blanks, this method allowed the quantification of many metals in very low concentration. Particular attention was given to Rare Earth Elements (REEs - La to Lu). The efficiency in the extraction of REEs was proved to be acceptable, with recoveries over 83% obtained with a Certified Reference Material (AMiS 0356). The analytical method was then applied to particulate matter samples, collected at ground level in Ny Ålesund (Svalbard Islands, Norway), during spring and summer, from 2010 to 2015, with daily resolution and using a low-volume device. Thus, for the first time, a large atmospheric concentrations dataset of metals in Arctic particulate matter at high temporal resolution is presented. On the basis of differences in LREE/HREE ratio and Ce and Eu anomalies in spring and summer samples, basic information to distinguish local and long-range transported dust were achieved.

Lutetium (Lu(III)), a heavy rare earth element, plays a critical role in advanced industrial processes and nuclear medicine applications. Given its high economic value and potential environmental risks, the recovery of Lu(III) from medical wastewater is both necessary and urgent. However, previous studies on the adsorption behavior of Lu(III) have been limited by low adsorption capacity, competition from coexisting metal ions, and the influence of environmental temperature.

Contrary to the traditional strengthening route by adding multiple & high-dosage alloying elements, we here explored extremely compositional and phase-constituent "simplification" in rare earth (RE) containing biodegradable magnesium alloys for better biocompatibility. An ultra-lean Mg-0.1Pr alloy with a multiscale microstructure has been developed through casting and extrusion, which showed well-balanced performances that match the commercial Mg-based orthopedic products.

The soil in reclaimed shale gas sites is compacted and suffers from issues like poor drainage, drought conditions, and nutrient deficiency, posing challenges for agricultural production. In this study, rare earth tailings were incorporated into biochar at different mass ratios (rare earth tailings: biochar = 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4). Subsequently, a series of rare earth tailings-doped biochar materials (REE-BC) were prepared by calcination at 700°C.

Populations of the acidophilic purple nonsulfur bacterium were identified in two geographically distinct thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA), as confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and detection of characteristic methoxylated ketocarotenoids. Microcosm-based carbon uptake assays where oxygenic photosynthesis was excluded via addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea yielded a light-driven dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) assimilation rate (7 ± 2 mg C g C h) comparable to those of highly productive algal mats in acidic hot springs, suggesting that may be performing photoautotrophy at the time of the assay. Rates of acetate assimilation were more than two orders of magnitude lower than DIC assimilation and did not differ between light and dark treatments, indicating photoheterotrophic use of acetate was not occurring, though photoheterotrophic assimilation of other organic compounds cannot be excluded.

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology enables the flexible fabrication of integrated monolithic microextraction chips for high-throughput sample pretreatment. Meanwhile, the extraction performance of 3DP-based channels is largely limited by printer resolution and the commercially available printing materials. In this work, a 3DP array monolithic microextraction chip (AMC) was fabricated by integrating 26-array helical monolithic microextraction channels for sample pretreatment and 52-array gas valves for fluid control.
