Carrageenan is a natural polysaccharide extracted from edible red seaweeds of Rhodophycea class. It has been used as a viscosity increasing or gelling agent for prolonged and controlled drug release, food, pharmaceuticals and other industries. However, in spite of wide range of applications, carrageenan has some drawbacks and adverse effects on the biological systems, so its modifications with natural and synthetic polymers are carried out. This review article presents different sources and properties of carrageenans with special emphasis on natural polymer based carrageenan blends and composites and their applications in controlled drug delivery system, wound dressing and tissue engineering because of their biodegradability and biocompatibility, food industry as thickening/gelling materials, cosmeceuticals and making polyelectrolyte complexes.

Archimedean spirals are architectural motifs that are found in nature. The facial asymmetry of amphiphilic molecules or macromolecules has been a key parameter in the preparation of these well-organized two-dimensional nanostructures in the laboratory. This facial asymmetry is also present in the helical grooves of chiral helical substituted poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) and poly(diphenylacetylene)s (PDPAs), making them excellent candidates for self-assembly into 2D Archimedean nanospirals or nanotoroids.

Hybrid artificial layer based on inorganic/polymer composite endows superior toughness and mechanical strength, which can achieve high stability of lithium metal anode. However, the large particle size and uneven distribution of inorganic fillers hinder the uniform flow of lithium ions across the membrane, making it difficult to achieve smooth lithium metal deposition/stripping. In this work, a chemical lithiation-induced defluorination strategy is proposed to engineer poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)-based artificial layers, enabling in situ incorporation of highly dispersed LiF nanofiller within the polymer matrix and precise control over the LiF content.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are important soft actuators that show strong promise in many fields where traditional rigid actuators or robotics are impractical. However, their real-world applications are lacking primarily due to inadequate actuation performance and complicated fabrication processes. Here, a novel design is reported that significantly enhances actuation performance while simplifying the fabrication process.

Mechanical stimuli-responsive shape transformations, exemplified by mimosa leaves, are widespread in nature, yet remain challenging to realize through facile fabrication in synthetic morphing materials. Herein, we demonstrate stretch-activated shape-morphing enabled by an elastic-plastic bilayer structure assembled dynamic crosslinking. Through dioxaborolane metathesis, a dynamic, crosslinked polyolefin elastomer (POEV) with elasticity and a co-crosslinked POE/paraffin wax blend (POE/PW-V) with tunable plasticity are prepared.

Background: Candidiasis, predominantly caused by , poses a significant global health challenge, especially in tropical regions. Nystatin is a potent antifungal agent that is hindered by its low solubility and permeability, limiting its clinical efficacy.
Methods: This study aimed to investigate the potential of a layer-by-layer (LBL) coating system, employing chitosan and alginate, to improve the stability, entrapment efficiency (%EE), and antifungal efficacy of nystatin-loaded liposomes against Candida albicans.
