Article Abstract

The effects of torrefaction on hemicellulose characteristics and its pyrolysis behaviors were studied in detail. The oxygen content decreased significantly after torrefaction, leading to the increase of high heating value. Two-dimensional perturbation correlation analysis based on diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was performed to characterize the structural evolutions. It was found the dehydration of hydroxyls and the dissociation of branches were the main reactions at low torrefaction temperature. When the temperature further increased, the depolymerization of hemicellulose and the fragmentation of monosaccharide residues occurred. The distributed activation energy model with double Gaussian functions based on reaction-order model was used to investigate the pyrolysis kinetics. The results showed that torrefaction enhanced the activation energy for degradation reactions while lowered that for condensation reactions, and increased the devolatilization contribution of condensation reactions. Besides, torrefaction decreased the yields of typical pyrolytic products, such as acids, furans, alicyclic ketones and so on.

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of HZSM-5 zeolite, HY-340 niobic acid, and torrefaction temperature on the deoxygenation of pyrolysis vapors from the catalytic pyrolysis of kraft lignin (493, 533, and 573 K) to produce aromatic hydrocarbons. The analytical pyrolysis (723, 823, and 923 K) of raw Kraft lignin at different catalyst/biomass ratios (1:1, 5:1, and 10:1) and without catalysts was performed. The pyrolysis vapor from analytical pyrolysis presented high levels of oxygenated compounds, mainly phenolics.

Torrefaction is a thermochemical pretreatment in which biomass is heated at 200-300 °C for 30-60 min in an inert atmosphere. Torrefaction has been previously used to improve the fuel properties of lignocellulosic biomass; however, the use of torrefaction for bioenergy generation represents a low-value final product as well as the dead end of the biomass value chain. Herein, we demonstrate the proof-of-concept for the utilisation of torrefaction as a pretreatment to convert low-value wood waste into biosurfactants, a high-value specialty biochemical.

The valorization of agro-industrial residues through torrefaction provides a sustainable pathway for biofuel production while mitigating environmental impacts associated with waste disposal. This study investigates the torrefaction of sericulture waste, specifically integral silkworm pupae (ISP) and lipid-extracted silkworm pupae (ESP), to assess the effect of lipid removal on biocoal properties. Initially, the ISP and ESP were subjected to torrefaction under various conditions (180-300 °C, 20-60 min) to compare their thermal behavior and fuel characteristics.

Aiming at the issues of low yield and poor quality of bio-oil obtained from direct pyrolysis of biomass, in this study, waste tobacco stems (TS) were used as raw materials, and the pretreatment methods of torrefaction and acid washing were adopted to study the effects of different torrefaction temperatures and pretreatment sequences on the quality of TS biomass and bio-oil. Results showed that combined pretreatment synergistically integrated deoxygenation from torrefaction and deashing from acid washing. High-temperature torrefaction-based combined pretreatment reduced TS oxygen content from 54.

In this review, the difference between microwave (MAP) and conventional pyrolysis (CP), reactor types, parameters affecting, and optimization were reported and compared in detail. Also, the catalysts used and their systematic role in enhancing the pyrolytic products with their effect were reviewed. In addition, the potential integration of microwave pyrolysis with other pretreatments, torrefaction, and anaerobic digestion for high-quality production, along with technology challenges and future direction, have been illustrated.
