The challenge of bringing DNA methylation biomarkers into clinic is the lack of simple methodologies as most current assays have been developed for research purposes. To address the limitations of current methods, we describe herein a novel methyl-protein domain (MBD) enrichment protocol for simple yet rapid and highly stringent selection of highly methylated DNA from limiting input samples. We then coupled this with a DNA-mediated flocculation assay for rapid and low cost naked-eye binary evaluation of highly methylated genes in cell line and blood DNA. The low resource requirements of our method may enable widespread adoption of DNA methylation-based diagnostics in clinic and may be useful for small-scale research.

Microgravity experiments on board the International Space Station, combined with particle-resolved direct numerical simulations, were conducted to investigate the long-term flocculation behavior of clay suspensions in saline water in the absence of gravity. After an initial homogenization of the suspensions, different clay compositions were continuously monitored for 99 days, allowing a detailed analysis of aggregate growth through image processing. The results indicate that the onboard oscillations (g-jitter) may have accelerated the aggregation process.

Chitosan is a promising bioflocculant for harvesting microalgae, its practical implementation is constrained by high dosage demands (typically >1 g/L) and suboptimal settling kinetics. And the microalgae harvesting process is susceptible to the significant influence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), the mechanism of which is still unclear. This study synthesized amino-functionalized chitosan-diatomite composites (APTES-CTS/DTE) and revealed the action mechanism of EPS in the flocculation of microalgae.

Partial denitrification coupled with anammox (PD/A) has emerged as a promising low-carbon strategy for energy-efficient nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater. However, the reactivation of PD/A systems following operational disturbances remains challenging, particularly under continuous-flow conditions, where microbial interactions and process stability are more complex than in sequencing batch reactors. This study systematically and first evaluated the recovery dynamics of a continuous-flow PD/A process seeded with low-activity granular sludge stored at 4 °C for three months.

Efficient and sustainable wastewater management is crucial for preserving freshwater resources. This study explores the novel application of a magnetic nanocomposite (MNC) for treating drilling wastewater, aiming to integrate magnetic properties into chemical contaminant adsorbents to create a regenerative coagulant. Polyaluminum chloride (PAC), a widely used synthetic coagulant with surface load-neutralizing capabilities, is often paired with polyacrylamide (PAM), a common flocculant and cross-linking agent, in hybrid coagulation-flocculation processes.
