Phosphonic and carboxylic fluorescent nanoparticles have been fabricated by direct reprecipitation in water. Their fluorescence properties strongly differ from those of the corresponding esters where strong H-bonding formation is prohibited. Comparative experiments between the two acid derivatives, differing only in their acid functions while keeping the same alkyl chain, have evidenced the peculiar behavior of the phosphonic acid derivative compared to its carboxylic analog. A dramatic emission quenching for the phosphonic acid in aprotic toluene could be observed while a fivefold increase in the fluorescence signal was observed for molecules assembled as nanoparticles. Such properties have been attributed on the theoretical basis to the formation of folded conformers in solution, leading to deactivation of the radiative excited state through intramolecular H-bonding. These studies evidence for the first time through time-resolved fluorescence measurements the stronger H-donating character of phosphonic acids compared to the carboxylic ones, and provide information on the degree of structural heterogeneity within the nanoparticles. They should pave the way for the rational fabrication of chelating acid fluorophores, able to complex metal oxides to yield stiff hybrid magnetofluorescent nanoparticles which are attracting considerable attention in the growing fields of bimodal imaging and vectorization applications.

This paper reports on a study of the adsorption and thermal stability of phenylphosphonic acid (PPA) adsorbed by physical vapor deposition on the surfaces of epitaxial cerium oxide films of different structure, stoichiometry and composition. Advanced analytical methods based on photoelectron spectroscopy combined with DFT calculations showed that the binding of PPA to cerium oxide is through the phosphonate group, while the decomposition temperature is defined by the nature of the oxide. Tridentate PPA species are present on all substrates (CeO, CeO, CeO, and CeWO), indicating a strong affinity of PPA for cerium oxide.

Developing efficient and sustainable catalytic systems for carbon dioxide utilization is crucial in tackling the challenges posed by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigates the co-catalyst- and solvent-free cycloaddition of CO with epoxides using a series of iron-based metal phosphonates, FePPA (iron phenylphosphonate), FeHEDP (iron hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate), and FeEDTMP (iron ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonate), with the aim of elucidating the role of acidic-basic sites in enhancing their catalytic performance. These catalysts, prepared using phosphonic acids with various functional groups, offer a platform for examining how structural modifications influence CO fixation efficiency.

Backyard chicken eggs are widely consumed worldwide, while they are also used as pollution bio-indicators for different groups of chemicals. In this study, home-produced eggs were collected from 17 chicken coops around Greece and analyzed for 46 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), heavy metals, pesticide, and pharmaceutical residues. The number of PFAS detected per sample ranged from 17 to 24, while the mean concentration of ΣPFAS was 7.

To enhance the flame retardancy of polylactic acid (PLA), a new flame retardant (MAZn) was synthesized by controlling the ratio of zinc phytate (ZnPA) and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP). The properties of modified PLA were tested by various experiments. Results showed that C5 (ATMP: ZnPA =10: 5) achieved the best flame retardancy.
