Pentafluorophenyl copper(I)-biarylsulfoxide complexes, existing as [Cu(CF)]L, both in solution and in the solid state, were prepared and thoroughly characterized. Subsequently, the photochemistry of the complexes was explored, showing inherent photoreactivity of the biarylsulfoxide moiety within the coordination sphere of the copper. Photoinduced cross-coupling reactions between the anthryl moiety of bis-anthracenylsulfoxide and pentafluorobenzene, and synthesis of CuO (cuprite), were demonstrated.

Novel norbornene-based imine-stabilized silylium ions 2 have been synthesized the simple reaction of sulfide-stabilized silylium ion 1 with carbonyl derivatives. Those silylium ions were fully characterized in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis as well as DFT calculations. Unlike the previously reported phosphine-stabilized silylium ion VI, behaving as a Lewis pair, calculations show that 2 have a strong Lewis acid character.

A norbornene-based sulfide stabilized silylium ion 4 has been synthesized. The S-Si interaction was studied in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis as well as DFT calculations. Unlike the previously reported phosphine-stabilized silylium ion VII, behaving as a Lewis pair, calculations predict that 4 should behave as a Lewis acid toward acrylate derivatives.

An isolable donor-stabilized silavinylidene phosphorane was synthesized. This molecule, which can also be regarded as a new carbon(0) complex featuring a phosphine and a donor-stabilized silylene ligand, presents a central carbon atom with a remarkably high electron density (-1.82).

The efficiency of the deprotonated aryl bis-sulfone [2,6-{(p-tolyl)SO2}2C6H3](-) as an O,C,O-coordinating pincer-type ligand was described. The bis-sulfone precursor was synthesized using a straightforward palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction. As a result of directed ortho metalation (DoM) through sulfonyl groups, a selective lithiation of the aryl group was achieved and the corresponding carbanion was isolated and its structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Synthesis of the originally proposed 8-oxo-8H-acenaphtho[1,2-b]pyrrol-9-carbonitrile led to a structural revision, and the product has now been identified as unknown compound 1-oxo-1H-phenalene-2,3-dicarbonitrile. The structural assignment was corroborated by detailed NMR studies and unambiguously confirmed by X-ray diffraction. A mechanism is proposed to explain the formation of this original heterocyclic scaffold.

Phosphonic and carboxylic fluorescent nanoparticles have been fabricated by direct reprecipitation in water. Their fluorescence properties strongly differ from those of the corresponding esters where strong H-bonding formation is prohibited. Comparative experiments between the two acid derivatives, differing only in their acid functions while keeping the same alkyl chain, have evidenced the peculiar behavior of the phosphonic acid derivative compared to its carboxylic analog.
