The growing demand for flexible electronic devices and hydrogen storage materials has spurred a resurgence of interest in polyaryl hydrocarbons including graphene, acenes, fullerenes, polythiophenes, etc. Indenofluorenes are another polyaryl molecular scaffold that has shown utility in the organic and hybrid materials arena, with polymers incorporating the indeno[1,2-b]fluorene moiety being common in organic light emitting diodes. This review examines the syntheses and properties of the five distinct indenofluorene regioisomers, with a focus on small molecule applications in organic electronics of this intriguing and somewhat underexplored family of polyaryl hydrocarbons.

Solid polymer batteries (SPEs) are highly desirable for energy storage because of the urgent need for higher energy density and safer lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, the single-ion lithium salt PAEK-LiCPSI was synthesized by grafting 3-chloropropanesulfonyl trifluoromethanesulimide lithium (LiCPSI) onto poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK). Nanocellulose (NCC), PAEK-LiCPSI, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF-HFP) were compounded to obtain NCC reinforced high-performance nanofiber composite polymer electrolytes (NCC/PAEK/PVDF) through electrospinning, which presented tensile strength of 15.

The introduction of hydrophobic side chain structures in anion exchange membranes (AEMs) to facilitate ion transport has been widely studied; however, low or moderate hydrophobic hydrocarbon and semifluorinated side chains are insufficient to induce a high degree of microphase separation. Herein, we design and prepare poly(aryl piperidinium) AEMs with completely methylene-free perfluorinated side chains, which can maximize the thermodynamic incompatibility between main- and side chains, thus enhancing microphase separation at medium ion exchange capacities (IECs). According to the molecular dynamics study, the methylene-free perfluorinated side chain leads to better hydration of cations.
