We present a detailed comparative investigation of the continuous-wave and mode-locked laser performance of a mixed rare-earth calcium oxoborate crystal, Yb:(Gd,Y)CaO(BO), abbreviated as Yb:(Gd,Y)COB, for all three principal optical polarizations. We present a comprehensive study of both continuous-wave and first mode-locked operation of a diode-pumped Yb:CaLa(BO) laser in the soliton regime. We report on the polarized spectroscopy, continuous-wave laser operation, and mode-locked laser performance of an ytterbium-doped disordered tetragonal rare-earth strontium aluminate crystal, Yb:GdSrAlO. In the continuous-wave regime, the diode-pumped Yb:GdSrAlO laser generated a maximum output power of 487 mW at 1064 nm (π-polarization), with a slope efficiency of 61%. By employing a commercial SESAM to initiate and stabilize soliton-like pulse formation, the mode-locked Yb:GdSrAlO laser generated transform-limited pulses as short as 38 fs at 1065.

We report on a power-scalable, diode-pumped sub-20-fs mode-locked (ML) laser based on a multisite ytterbium-doped strontium yttrium borate crystal, Yb:SrY(BO), exhibiting broadband spectral gain. We present the first Kerr-lens mode-locked solid-state laser based on ytterbium-doped monoclinic magnesium monotungstate as an active medium. We report on the investigation of continuous-wave (CW) and SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM) mode-locked operation of a Yb:GdScO laser.
