Orofacial neuropathic pain, a debilitating condition associated with trigeminal nerve injury, is often characterized by allodynia. N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), particularly the GluN1 subunit, play a central role in mediating this pain. The GluN1 subunit undergoes alternative splicing at exon 5, generating isoforms GluN1a (lacking the exon 5-encoded N1 cassette) and GluN1b (retaining the N1 cassette), which have distinct functional roles.

However, significant controversies exist regarding whether modified TyG indices, such as TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, and TyG-WHtR, outperform the TyG index in predicting cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to explore whether there was a synergistic effect of a body shape index (ABSI), a better parameter reflecting visceral obesity, and the TyG index on cardiovascular mortality.

Background: To assess the safety and efficacy of phakic refractive lens (PRL) implantation for correcting high myopia, as well as an ophthalmic viscosurgical device-free (OVD-free) method for PRL implantation.
Methods: In this real-world prospective study, consecutive patients implanted with PRL in one or both eyes were enrolled. Based on the surgical techniques used, the eyes were divided into the OVD-free method group and the conventional method group.
Background: Despite increasing studies underscoring the effectiveness of new media teaching strategies in pharmacology education, the influence of different educational backgrounds is still unclear. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of new media teaching under various educational backgrounds in pharmacology education using network meta-analysis.
Methods: Literature databases were searched from their inception to February 28, 2024 for eligible trials.
Temporomandibular joint inflammatory diseases are a significant subtype of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) characterized by inflammatory pain in the orofacial area. The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), specifically the NR2A subtype, was crucial in neuropathic pain. However, the exact role of NR2A in inflammatory pain in the TMJ and the molecular and cellular mechanisms mediating peripheral sensitization in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) remain unclear.

However, whether they have an additive effect on the risk of mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to explore whether the combined assessment of the TyG index and eGDR improved the prediction of long-term mortality in individuals with and without diabetes.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTemporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a severe form of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), and orofacial inflammatory allodynia is one of its common symptoms which lacks effective treatment. N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), particularly its subtypes GluN2A and GluN2B, along with gap junctions (GJs), are key players in the mediation of inflammatory pain. However, the precise regulatory mechanisms of GluN2A, GluN2B, and GJs in orofacial inflammatory allodynia during TMJ inflammation still remain unclear.

Increasing evidence demonstrates long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in the pathological process of neuropathic pain. This study aims to explore the function and mechanism of LncRNA Anxa10-203 in the development of orofacial neuropathic pain.

Extensive investigations have been conducted regarding the potential correlation between blood type and the immune system, as well as cancer risk in the Southern Chinese population. However, the prognostic value of the blood group and its genetic determinants in the context of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment remains unclear. Therefore, the associations between the ABO blood group and its single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were examined in relation to ICI treatment outcomes in 370 eligible patients with cancer.

The reconstruction of buccal-penetrating defects remains challenging. The present study aims to explore the application value of the lateral arm free flap (LAFF) on the reconstruction of buccal-penetrating defects with the hope of providing a better option for clinical practice. Nineteen patients with this kind of issue posed by either tumor resections or deformities in the craniofacial regions were recruited in this study, and LAFF was employed to reconstruct these defects by double folding and individually designing the flap.

Background: Labyrinthine fistula (LF) is a very common clinical complication mainly caused by middle ear cholesteatoma. Whether the presence of different degree LF caused by middle ear cholesteatoma aggravates neurosensory hearing loss (NSHL) and what is the degree of the hearing loss caused by LF were still under controversial. This study aimed to investigate whether the LF degree is correlative with the age distribution, disease duration and hearing loss degree for cholesteatomatous patients.

Cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma (cNEC) is rarely seen in the external ear. In this paper, we newly describe a patient with cNEC in his right external auditory canal, followed by a further discussion on the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatments of cNEC of the external ear. A review of the literature showed that cNEC of the external auditory canal generally presents as asymptomatic and that pathology yields the most confirmative diagnosis.
