Objective: To evaluate the association between erectile dysfunction (ED) and myocardial infarction (MI) using two sample Mendelian randomization.

Methods: A Mendelian randomization study was conducted using comprehensive data on ED and MI from extensive genome-wide association data. Using inverse variance weighted analysis for causal relationships, and correct for confounding factors using multivariate Mendelian randomization, the potential mediating effects were evaluated as well.

This study explores the relationship between user perceptions, as measured by the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, and actual usage patterns of the ADLIFE Digital Personalized Care Platform. Data were collected from healthcare professionals and patients/informal caregivers across multiple pilot sites. Significant correlations were found between usability factors, technology anxiety, performance expectancy, and platform usage metrics, underscoring the importance of user-centred design and support systems.

Over the past two decades, there has been a substantial increase in the use of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). In the smart healthcare setting, patients' data can be quickly collected, stored and processed through insecure medium such as the internet or cloud computing. To address this issue, researchers have developed a range of encryption algorithms to protect medical image data, however these remain vulnerable to brute force and differential cryptanalysis attacks by eavesdroppers.

This study evaluates the performance of ChatGPT-4, a Large Language Model (LLM), in automatically extracting U scores from free-text thyroid ultrasound reports collected from University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), UK, between 2014 and 2024. The LLM was provided with guidelines on the U classification system and extracted U scores independently from 14,248 de-identified reports, without access to human-assigned scores. The LLM-extracted scores were compared to initial clinician-assigned and refined U scores provided by expert reviewers.

With the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for image analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), the lack of training data has become an issue. Realistic synthetic MRI images can serve as a solution and generative models have been proposed. This study investigates the most recent advances on synthetic brain MRI image generation with AI-based generative models.

Objective: To assess the impact of the biopsy core length on the discrepancy in Gleason score between biopsy and radical prostatectomy specimens.

Patients And Methods: Retrospective analysis of clinical data from 247 patients who underwent transperineal prostate biopsy and radical prostatectomy of prostate cancer at our centre from 2022 to 2023. The clinical data included age, pre-biopsy prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, prostate volume, number of biopsy needles, number of positive biopsy needles, biopsy core length, biopsy Gleason score and post-radical prostatectomy Gleason score.

Fibrotic cataracts, the most frequent complications after phacoemulsification, cannot be cured by drugs in clinic. The primary mechanism underlying the disease is the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Cimifugin is a natural monomer component of traditional Chinese medicines.

Background: Constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) is a chronic functional intestinal disease that can significantly reduce patients' quality of life.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the clinical effect and mechanism of YunPi RouGan (YPRG) prescription on IBS-C patients with liver-depression and spleen-deficiency syndrome.

Methods: 42 IBS-C patients receiving treatment at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine from May 2022 to March 2023 were recruited and randomly assigned to either the treatment or control group, with 21 patients in each group.

The skin, being the body's largest organ, plays a pivotal role in protecting the body against dangerous external factors. The maintenance of adequate hydration levels is essential for the skin to fulfill this protective function. However, skin hydration depends upon different biophysical factors and lifestyles, such as ethnicity, sex, age, water consumption, and many more.

The efficacy of immunotherapy for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), especially advanced ccRCC, is limited, presenting a clinical challenge. This limitation is closely tied to the immune regulation network. Understanding the heterogeneity of the tumour microenvironment (TME) is crucial for developing advanced ccRCC therapies.

Transdermal drug delivery patches are a good alternative to hypodermic drug injection. The drug delivery efficiency depends strongly on the hydration of the skin under treatment, and therefore, it is essential to study the effects on the skin induced by the application of these medical-grade patches. Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy shows great promise for non-invasive skin evaluation due to its high sensitivity to subtle changes in water content, low power and non-ionizing properties.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to improve the diagnosis of prostate cancer through enhanced biopsy techniques, specifically by analyzing the effect of tissue strip length on cancer detection.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 754 patients who underwent prostate biopsies, comparing tissue strip lengths between those diagnosed with cancer and those who were not.
  • Findings showed that longer tissue strips (greater than 11.8 mm) significantly increased the likelihood of detecting prostate cancer, with a sensitivity of 71.4% and specificity of 73.8%.

Objective: Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to explore the causal relationship between diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and prostate cancer (PCa) in East Asian population.

Methods: Mendelian randomization is a causal inference method based on genetic variation, which uses the influence of randomly assigned genotypes in nature on phenotype to infer the impact of biological factors on diseases. This study used genetic variation genes related to inflammatory biomarkers as instrumental variables to improve inference, and patient data was obtained from the GWAS database's aggregated association results.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate factors influencing the success of manual reduction of testicular torsion and the safety of conservative treatment afterward.
  • Clinical data from 66 patients treated for testicular torsion between 2017 and 2022 were analyzed, with some undergoing manual reduction without anesthesia.
  • Successful manual reduction led to varied treatment choices, with a recommendation for immediate or elective surgical treatment due to the risk of recurrence, despite a short duration of pain being linked to successful outcomes.

Background: A sight-threatening, cataract is a common degenerative disease of the ocular lens. This study aimed to explore the regulatory mechanism of age-related cataract (ARC) formation and progression.

Methods: Cataracts in Sprague Dawley rats were induced by adopting the method that injected selenite subcutaneously in the nape.

Article Synopsis
  • Five taxa of Delphinium subgenus Anthriscifolium were analyzed through chromosome counting and measurement, revealing a basic chromosome number of x = 8.
  • Two diploid taxa had 2n = 16 chromosomes, while one taxon was tetraploid with 2n = 32, showing varied karyotypic asymmetry and differences in genome sizes.
  • The study provided new insights into the karyotype and genome size for several taxa and led to a revision in their classification based on cytological and morphological data.

Objective: To provide a reference for future policy and measure formulation by conducting a detailed analysis of the burden of vision loss due to cataract by year, age, and gender in China from 1990 to 2019.

Methods: Data on the prevalence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to cataract in China and neighboring and other G20 countries were extracted from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study to observe the changing trends of vision loss.

Results: The number and rate of all-age prevalence and DALYs for cataract in China increased significantly from 1990 to 2019.

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world, and there is a lack of effective treatment drugs. CircRNA plays an important part in a variety of diseases, however, the role of circRNA in cataracts remains largely unknown. In this study, we constructed a cataract model of rats and obtained the circRNAs related to cataracts by whole transcriptome sequencing and circRNA-mRNA co-expression network.
