The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has an extensive frozen soil distribution and intense geological tectonic activity. Our surveys reveal that Qinghai-Tibet Plateau earthquakes can not only damage infrastructure but also significantly impact carbon dioxide emissions. Fissures created by earthquakes expose deep, frozen soils to the air and, in turn, accelerate soil carbon emissions.

Background: Crop rotation is an important agricultural practice that often affects the metabolic processes of soil microorganisms through the composition and combination of crops, thereby altering nutrient cycling and supply to the soil. Although the benefits of crop rotation have been extensively discussed, the effects and mechanisms of different crop combinations on the soil microbial community structure in specific environments still need to be analyzed in detail.

Materials And Methods: In this study, six crop rotation systems were selected, for which the spring crops were mainly tobacco or gramineous crops: AT (asparagus lettuce and tobacco rotation), BT (broad bean and tobacco rotation), OT (oilseed rape and tobacco rotation), AM (asparagus lettuce and maize rotation), BM (broad bean and maize rotation), and OR (oilseed rape and rice rotation).

Nonlinear wavefront shaping in periodically poled ferroelectric crystals has received great attention because it offers a convenient way to generate a structured light beam at new frequencies. In contrast to structurally uniform beams like Laguerre-Gaussian or Hermite-Gaussian modes, here we demonstrate the possibility to generate a spatially varied optical bottle beam via a frequency doubling process in a domain-engineered SrBaNbO (SBN) crystal. The nonlinear holography method was employed to design the modulation pattern of the second-order nonlinear coefficient χ, and the femtosecond laser poling was used to imprint the χ pattern into the SBN crystal via ferroelectric domain inversion.

  • The fall webworm (Dury), an invasive species from North America, has a significant effect on European agriculture, but its ability to adapt to the European climate is not fully understood.
  • Research shows that fall webworms in Europe can survive in less diverse climatic conditions than those in North America, suggesting that they have the potential to expand their range significantly if they adapt to European climates.
  • Potentially unfilled habitats across much of Europe indicate a risk of invasion, particularly without strict control measures, making small niche shifts critical indicators of invasion risk compared to larger range shifts.

Water eutrophication is a serious global issue because of excess external and internal nutrient inputs. Understanding the intensity and contribution of internal nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loading in deep-water ecosystems is of great significance for water body eutrophication management. In this study, we combined intact sediment core incubation, high-resolution peeper (HR-Peeper) sampling, and analysis of N and P forms and other environmental factors in the water column and sediments to evaluate the contributions of internal N and P loading to water eutrophication by N and P fluxes across the sediment-water interface (SWI) of the Panjiakou Reservoir (PJKR), a deep-water ecosystem where eutrophication threatens the security of the local drinking water supply in North China.

Freshwater reservoirs are regarded as an important anthropogenic source of methane (CH) emissions. The temporal and spatial variability of CH emissions from different reservoirs results in uncertainty in the estimation of the global CH budget. In this study, surface water CH concentrations were measured and diffusive CH fluxes were estimated via a thin boundary layer model in a temperate river-reservoir system in North China, using spatial (33 sites) and temporal (four seasons) monitoring; the system has experienced intensive aquaculture disturbance.

Dry and hot extremes are major sources of risk to crop yields, and their impacts are expected to increase under future global warming. The co-occurring dry and hot conditions during crop growing seasons have amplified impacts on crop health that are even larger than the sum of their individual impacts, which may cause crop failure. In this study, we focus on the compound dry and hot growing seasons (hereafter CDHGS) for global wheat, rice, maize and soybean in the period 1951-2020.
