An iron(III)-catalyzed methanesulfonic-acid-mediated [3 + 2 + 1C] annulation of enaminones assembling a 1,2-dihydropyridine (1,2-DHP) scaffold has been developed for the first time. This approach facilitates the rapid synthesis of 2-hydroxy-1,2-DHP derivatives in moderate to excellent yields with a broad substrate scope under mild conditions. The employment of 1,3-dioxolane as both a 1C synthon and solvent enables simultaneous incorporation of both a carbon atom and a hydroxy group into 1,2-DHPs.

Introduction: Equol, a gut microbiome-derived metabolite of soy isoflavone daidzein, functions as a selective estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) agonist. In preclinical studies, it has demonstrated vascular protective and antioxidant effects, with emerging evidence suggesting potential neuroprotective properties. However, its role in preventing vascular aging and cognitive decline in humans remains unexplored.

Diffusion tensor imaging can detect brain white matter changes in classical trigeminal neuralgia (TN). However, it lacks specificity for individual tissue microstructural features, such as neurite density, orientation dispersions, and extracellular edema. Neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), a novel diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, can provide these distinct indices.

The full implementation of partial nitrification (PN) is still limited by low influent NH-N concentrations. The stability and boundary conditions for nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) inhibition in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) mode for low-strength wastewater with dynamic environments remain ambiguous. This study attempted to identify the critical factors and extended boundary conditions for the stable PN in SBR.

Manganese oxide is widely considered as a prominent cathode material for Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) because of its merits including low cost, high voltage, non-toxicity and excellent stability. However, its sluggish reaction kinetics and structural instability limit its practical application in ZIBs. In this paper, a one-step method for preparing nickel-doped δ-MnO (Ni-δ-MnO) at room temperature is introduced.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on brain MRIs and cognitive decline, focusing on how these factors may differ between sexes.
  • Researchers analyzed 713 participants aged 49-89, assessing the effects of modifiable risk factors for WMH and examining their impact on long-term dementia outcomes.
  • Findings suggest that age and type 2 diabetes significantly influence WMH volume, with stronger correlations identified in females, and that WMH burden is linked to worse dementia outcomes over time specifically in females.

Substantial uncertainties pose challenges to the accuracy of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) quantification in wastewater. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of two concentration methods, three nucleic acid extraction methods, and the amplification performance of eight primer-probe sets. Our results showed that the two concentration methods exhibited similar recovery rates.

How to intensify the ammonia oxidation rate (AOR) is still a bottleneck impeding the technology development for the innovative acidic partial nitritation because the eosinophilic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), such as Nitrosoglobus or Nitrosospira, were inhibited by the high-level free nitrous acid (FNA) accumulation in acidic environments. In this study, an innovative approach of dynamic acidic pH regulation control strategy was proposed to realize high-rate acidic partial nitritation driven by common AOB genus Nitrosomonas. The acidic partial nitrification process was carried out in a laboratory-scale sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactor (SBMBBR) for long-term (700 days) to track the effect of dynamic acidic pH on nitrifying bacterial activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates sex-specific risk factors for white matter hyperintensities (WMH), linked to cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), and their impact on cognitive decline in older adults.
  • Using MRI data from 713 participants (241 males and 472 females), it analyzes how factors like age and type 2 diabetes relate to WMH volume in both sexes.
  • Results indicate that females had a stronger correlation between age and WMH volume, with type 2 diabetes affecting only females, and WMH burden negatively impacted longitudinal dementia outcomes specifically in females.

Introduction: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a crucial molecule in cellular metabolism and signaling. Mapping intracellular NAD content of human brain has long been of interest. However, the sub-millimolar level of cerebral NAD concentration poses significant challenges for measurement and imaging.

White matter hyperintensity (WMH) lesions on brain MRI images are surrogate markers of cerebral small vessel disease. Longitudinal studies examining the association between diabetes and WMH progression have yielded mixed results. Thus, in this study, we investigated the association between HbA1c, a biomarker for the presence and severity of hyperglycemia, and longitudinal WMH change after adjusting for known risk factors for WMH progression.

With the increasing complexity of influent composition in wastewater treatment plants, the potential stimulating effects of refractory organic matter in wastewater on growth characteristics and genera conversion of nitrifying bacteria (ammonium-oxidizing bacteria [AOB] and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria [NOB]) need to be further investigated. In this study, domestic wastewater was co-treated with landfill leachate in the lab-scale reactor, and the competition and co-existence of NOB genera Nitrotoga and Nitrospira were observed. The results demonstrated that the addition of landfill leachate could induce the growth of Nitrotoga, whereas Nitrotoga populations remain less competitive in domestic wastewater operation.

Acidic partial nitritation (PN) is a promising technology to achieve low-cost and energy-efficient shortcut nitrogen removal from wastewater. However, a comprehensive understanding of the acidic PN under dynamic changes of pH in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is still lacking. In this study, we successfully established acidic PN (NO accumulation ratio >80%) under dynamic pH variation from 7.

Objective: White matter microstructural abnormalities in patients with classic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) have been observed. However, the impact of classic TN in both hemispheres, the difference and extent of alterations in bilateral hemispheres, and the relationship between the impaired area and pain conduction are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate brain microstructural alterations and compare the bilateral hemispheres in patients with unilateral classic TN, as well as to explore their clinical implications.

Recycling nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) from human urine can potentially offset more than 13% of global agricultural fertilizer demand. Biological nitrification is a promising method for converting volatile ammonia in high-strength human urine into stable ammonium nitrate (a typical fertilizer), but it is usually terminated in the intermediate production of nitrite due to the inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by free nitrous acid (FNA). This study aimed to develop a stable nitrification process in a unique two-stage bioreactor by removing critical barriers associated with FNA inhibition.

Zinc oxide is a popular semiconductor used in catalysts due to its wide bandgap and high exciton binding energy. However, the photocatalytic performance of ZnO was compromised by its insufficient electron-hole separation efficiency and electron transfer rate. Herein, ZnO-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite solid catalyst was synthesized by one-step electrodeposition method on FTO substrate using lithium perchlorate (LiClO) as the supporting electrolyte.
