Mediating effect of coping strategy and psychological status between illness perception and quality of life among patients with atrial fibrillation: a cross-sectional study.

Background: This study investigated the mediating effects of coping strategies and psychological status on the relationship between illness perception and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 178 patients with AF who were admitted to a tertiary hospital in Beijing City in mainland from March 2020 and June 2022. Assessments were made for HRQoL using the Short Form Health Survey depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, anxiety using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), illness perception using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), AF symptoms using the Atrial Fibrillation Severity Scale (AFSS), and coping strategies using the Brief-COPE Scale.

Introduction: Asian American caregivers supporting loved ones with dementia experience greater burden and more stress than other racial/ethnic groups, warranting the need for more culturally and linguistically appropriate formal support, such as in nursing homes. Transitioning loved ones into nursing homes with dementia care units is a complex process that can be impacted by a multitude of factors. Employing several established frameworks, including the socioecological model, this qualitative study will focus on the largest Asian American subgroup (people of Chinese descent) and explore the experience of family caregivers as they support the transition of their loved ones with dementia into nursing homes in the USA.

Background: The overall impact of social connectedness on health outcomes in older adults living in nursing homes and assisted living settings is unknown. Given the unclear health impact of social connectedness for older adults in congregate long-term care settings worldwide, a comprehensive systematic review is required to evaluate the overall relationship between social connectedness and health outcomes for them.

Objectives: The purpose of this article was to synthesize the literature regarding the health impact of social connectedness among older adults living in nursing homes or assisted living settings.

Supporting Diverse Family Caregivers: Key Stakeholder Perspectives.

This study aimed to understand the perspectives of key stakeholders regarding strategies for better supporting culturally and ethnically diverse family caregivers, aiming to incorporate them into the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Advisory Council's proposed National Strategy. The Strategy, published in 2022, identified priority actions to support the growing population of people providing unpaid care to people of all ages with disabilities, with a goal of improving the health and well-being of both the family caregiver and the person receiving support. Researchers conducted extensive outreach to purposively diverse stakeholder organizations, using six stakeholder strategy sessions with representatives from 42 groups in December 2020 to identify preliminary themes.

A comparison of mood, quality of life and executive function among narcolepsy type 1 patients with or without ADHD symptoms in China.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of core attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in Chinese narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) patients and to explore mood, quality of life, and executive function in narcolepsy patients with or without ADHD and the response to Methylphenidate Hydrochloride Extended-release tablets (ER-MPH) treatment.

Method: A total of 267 pediatric NT1 patients (194 males and 73 females, 5-17 years old) were evaluated for ADHD symptoms by a psychiatrist using the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents (MINI Kid) from February 2011 to July 2013 at Peking University People's Hospital. All patients underwent Stanford Sleep Inventory (SSI) evaluation and polysomnography followed by multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) before ER-MPH treatment.

Ubiquitous co-existence of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in smelting operations and mine drainage presents a major challenge to the environment. Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation into secondary, more crystalline minerals often controls the geochemical behavior of associated contaminants including arsenate (As(V)) and Cd(II) in natural and contaminated environments. However, the fate of co-existent As(V) and Cd(II) and the underlying mechanism during this transformation process remain unclear.

2,2',4,4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is associated with various adverse human health effects; however, the knowledge of its toxicity is still very limited. Mitochondrial injury has been observed in liver cells exposed to BDE-47 in vitro. Mitophagy impairment causes the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria, contributing to the pathological mechanisms of liver injury.

Assessment of patient experiences following total sacrectomy for primary malignant sacral tumors: A qualitative study.

Background And Objectives: Few reports have investigated patient experiences following total en bloc sacrectomy. The aims of this study were to obtain a deeper understanding of patients' personal experiences, needs, and satisfaction with the treatment to reveal areas in which perioperative and long-term patient care can be improved.

Methods: A qualitative design was applied to examine patient experiences and supportive care needs.

Cryopreservation of gametophytes of Laminaria japonica (phaeophyta) with two-step cooling: interactions between variables related to post-thaw survival.

Little attention has been given to the effect of interactions between different cryogenic parameters on the viability of cryopreserved algae. Gametophytes of Laminaria japonica were cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen by two-step cooling, and interactions were tested for optimizing the cooling protocol and improving freeze-tolerance. UNOVA of a general linear model suggested that interactions between both cooling rate and holding time and between holding temperature and holding time significantly affected the survival of thawed gametophytes.
