Serotype-specific effectiveness against pneumococcal carriage and serotype replacement after ten-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV10) introduction in Pakistan.

Objective: Pakistan was one of the first South-Asian countries to introduce the ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) at the national level, using a 3+0 schedule without catchup, in 2013.

Methods: From 2014-18, fifteen children <2 years old were recruited every week in Matiari, Sindh, and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected. The samples were cultured, and pneumococcus was further serotyped through multiplex PCR at the Aga Khan University Hospital as per the method described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA.

The economic viability of microalgae as a bioenergy source depends on many factors. High CO fixing rate, improved lipids yield, and minimum water footprint are few key parameters. This study investigates the effect of four initial nitrogen concentrations (1-, 2-, 6- and 10-mM as nitrate) on lipids yield, their classification and composition, CO fixation rate, and water quality for further reuse after first cultivation.

Two experienced endodontists evaluated 149 CBCT images, containing n = 298 mandibular first molars and n = 298 mandibular second molars. Binary logistic regression was used to explore the relationship between the presence of middle mesial canal and other independent variables.

Removal of pharmaceuticals from water using sewage sludge-derived biochar: A review.

In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the beneficial utilization of sewage sludge to reduce the risks associated with sludge disposal. Besides other applications of sludge, biochar produced from sludge has also been employed for the elimination of various pollutants from water. This review critically evaluates the recent progress in applications of sludge-based biochar for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals from water.

Cyclic Peptide-Gadolinium Nanocomplexes as siRNA Delivery Tools.

We have recently reported that a cyclic peptide containing five tryptophan, five arginine, and one cysteine amino acids [(WR)C], was able to produce peptide-capped gadolinium nanoparticles, [(WR)C]-GdNPs, in the range of 240 to 260 nm upon mixing with an aqueous solution of GdCl. Herein, we report [(WR)C]-GdNPs as an efficient siRNA delivery system. The peptide-based gadolinium nanoparticles (50 µM) did not exhibit significant cytotoxicity (~93% cell viability at 50 µM) in human leukemia T lymphoblast cells (CCRF-CEM) and triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) after 48 h.

A three-step strategy is introduced to develop inherent iminodiacetic (IDA)-functionalized nanopolymer. SEM micrographs show homogenous spherical beads with a particle size of 500 nm. Further modification to COOH-functionalized 1,2-epoxy-5-hexene/DVB mesoporous nanopolymer enriches glycopeptides via hydrophilic interactions followed by their MS determination.

Background: In Pakistan, the prevalence of stunting among children younger than 5 y has remained above WHO critical thresholds (≥30%) over the past 2 decades.

Objectives: We hypothesized that an unconditional cash transfer (UCT) combined with lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS) and/or social and behavior change communication (SBCC) will prevent stunting among children 6-23 mo of age.

Methods: This was a 4-arm, community-based cluster randomized controlled trial conducted in the district of Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan.

The optimization of molecular geometries were performed with density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP 6-31G (d,p) level of theory. The frontier molecular orbital (FMO) energies, band gap energies and dipole moments (ground and excited state) have been calculated to probe the photovoltaic properties.

CGKRK is a well-known tumor homing peptide with significant specificity for many types of cancer tissues. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a novel drug delivery system based on dextran decorated with myristoyl-ECGKRK peptide. The myristoylated peptide was synthesized and conjugated to dextran via an ester bond followed by purification.

Occurrence and Health Risk Assessment of Aflatoxins through Intake of Eastern Herbal Medicines Collected from Four Districts of Southern Punjab-Pakistan.

Eastern herbal medicines (HMs) are plant-derived naturally occurring substances with minimum or no industrial processing that have long been used in traditional medicine. Aflatoxins are frequent contaminants of plants. Therefore, these mycotoxins are likely to contaminate HMs and pose a health risk to individuals using them on a regular basis as preventive or curative treatments of various diseases.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) represent an exciting class of two-dimensional inorganic materials with unique physicochemical properties. They have been widely employed in water treatment due to their high surface areas, excellent ion exchange capacities, and highly tunable structures. They have also been employed in the fabrication and development of membranes for water treatment.

An ensemble framework based on Deep CNNs architecture for glaucoma classification using fundus photography.

Glaucoma is a chronic ocular degenerative disease that can cause blindness if left untreated in its early stages. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (Deep CNNs) and its variants have provided superior performance in glaucoma classification, segmentation, and detection. In this paper, we propose a two-staged glaucoma classification scheme based on Deep CNN architectures.

Exploration of ethnomedicinal plants and their practices in human and livestock healthcare in Haripur District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Background: The utilization of plants and plant resources for various ethnobotanical purposes is a common practice in local towns and villages of developing countries, especially in regard to human and veterinary healthcare. For this reason, it is important to unveil and document ethnomedicinal plants and their traditional/folk usage for human and livestock healthcare from unexplored areas. Here we advance our findings on ethnomedicinal plants from Haripur District, Pakistan, not only for conservation purposes, but also for further pharmacological screenings and applied research.

Hybrid Cyclic-Linear Cell-Penetrating Peptides Containing Alternative Positively Charged and Hydrophobic Residues as Molecular Transporters.

The cell membrane properties create a significant obstacle in intracellular delivery of cell-impermeable and negatively charged molecules. Herein, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of a novel series of hybrid cyclic-linear peptides containing alternative positive and hydrophobic amino acids on the ring and side chain [(RW)]K(RW) ( = 1-5) to compare their molecular transporter efficiency. The peptides were synthesized through Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis.

Following on from the devastating spread of COVID-19, a major global priority has been the production, procurement, and distribution of effective vaccines to ensure that the global pandemic reaches an end. However, concerns were raised about worrying side effects, particularly the occurrence of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia after administration of the Oxford/AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, in a phenomenon being termed vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT). Similar to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), this condition has been associated with the development of anti-platelet factor 4 antibodies, purportedly leading to neutrophil-platelet aggregate formation.

Students' and Faculty Perspectives Toward the Role and Value of the Hidden Curriculum in Undergraduate Medical Education: a Qualitative Study from Saudi Arabia.

A hidden medical curriculum is defined as the unwritten, unofficial, and unintended learning that students experience in medical school along with more formal aspects of education. This term describes the behaviours, attitudes, assumptions and beliefs conveyed by teachers, peers and the surrounding environment. However, more research is needed to evaluate its impact on student and faculty interactions in this context.
