Background: Cachexia accounts for about 20% of all cancer-related deaths and it is indicative of poor prognosis and progressive functional impairment. The role of the gut microbiome in the development of cachexia in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients has not been established.
Methods: Pre-surgical stool samples from n = 103 stage I-III CRC patients in the ColoCare Study were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing (Illumina) to characterize fecal bacteria.
Ensuring high vaccination coverage is vital, particularly during a pandemic. While pre-booked appointment letters have shown promise in vaccination campaigns, their effectiveness in specific sociodemographic groups remains to be explored. Our study evaluated the effect of pre-booked appointment letters on COVID-19 vaccine uptake within different sociodemographic groups using a quasi-experimental methodology.

The objectives of the study are to understand the perception of discrimination and workplace violence, the most frequent types of discrimination, the factors related to perceived discrimination and violence, and the degree of knowledge about institutional protocols.
Materials And Methods: Cross-sectional study.
Background: Body composition is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) survival. However, body composition measurements have traditionally relied on single-slice, axial imaging. Fully automated volumetric body composition analysis is widely available, but associations with CRC survival have yet to be examined in detail.

We aimed to identify blood-based epigenetic biomarkers associated with incident CKD and develop a methylation risk score (MRS) predicting CKD in individuals with newly diagnosed T2D. DNA methylation was analyzed epigenome wide in blood from 487 individuals with newly diagnosed T2D, of whom 88 developed CKD during an 11.

Predicting which IPMNs will progress to PDAC remains a clinical challenge. Moreover, identifying those clinically evident IPMNs for which a surveillance approach is best is a dire clinical need.

A cranial computed tomography revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage without apparent aneurysms and a left temporal hyperdense lesion suggestive of intraparenchymal hematoma on the follow-up computed tomography. Cerebral angiography showed irregularities in the right internal carotid artery, including a pseudoaneurysm and multiple stenoses in pial arteries, which were related to chronic cocaine use.

Here, we study key human kidney cell types implicated in DKD (podocytes, glomerular endothelial, mesangial and proximal tubular cells) in insulin sensitive and resistant conditions, and perform simultaneous transcriptomics and proteomics for integrated analysis. Our data is further compared with bulk- and single-cell transcriptomic kidney biopsy data from early- and advanced-stage DKD patient cohorts.

We previously demonstrated that the endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA) atrasentan reduced insulin resistance in T2D. In this study, we compared the effect of atrasentan on insulin resistance across different phenotypic clusters of patients with T2D.

Distinguishing subpopulations within which cardiometabolic risk diverges from the risk expected for a given body mass index (BMI) may facilitate precision prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. Accordingly, we performed unsupervised clustering in four European population-based cohorts (N ≈ 173,000).

Importance And Aims: Diabetic microvascular complications significantly impact morbidity and mortality. This review focuses on machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI) in predicting diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and diabetic neuropathy (DN).
Methods: A comprehensive PubMed search from 1990 to 2023 identified studies on ML/AI models for diabetic microvascular complications.
Importance: While the incidence of early-onset metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) has been increasing, studies on the age-related disparity in this group of patients are limited.
Objective: To evaluate the association of age with treatment-related adverse events and survival in patients with mCRC and explore the potential underlying factors.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study included 1959 individuals.
Urinary extracellular vesicles (uEV) are a largely unexplored source of kidney-derived mRNAs with potential to serve as a liquid kidney biopsy. We assessed ∼200 uEV mRNA samples from clinical studies by genome-wide sequencing to discover mechanisms and candidate biomarkers of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in Type 1 diabetes (T1D) with replication in Type 1 and 2 diabetes. Sequencing reproducibly showed >10,000 mRNAs with similarity to kidney transcriptome.

The early prediction of progression of CKD therefore is an important clinical goal, but remains difficult due to the multifaceted nature of the condition. We validated a set of established protein biomarkers for the prediction of trajectories of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in people with moderately advanced chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus.

Here, we explored whether fasting and oral glucose tolerance test post-challenge glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and GLP-1 levels were associated with incident first cancer. Within the cardiovascular re-examination arm of the population-based Malmö Diet Cancer study (n = 3734), 685 participants with a previous cancer diagnosis were excluded, resulting in 3049 participants (mean age 72.

Here, the chemical composition (crude protein, total lipids, Nitrogen Free Extract and fiber) and the presence of minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Mo, Se) and unwanted elements (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Ni, Cr, Al) were determined in eleven seaweeds from Chile. Depending on the species, a good contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance for K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn and Se was observed, and low Na/K ratios (<1.

The policy stated that people aged 70 years or older should avoid crowded places and contact with people outside the household.
Methods: We used a regression discontinuity design-in combination with self-reported isolation data from COVID Symptom Study Sweden (n = 96 053; age range: 39-79 years) and national register data (age range: 39-100+ years) on severe COVID-19 disease (hospitalization or death, n = 21 804) and confirmed cases (n = 48 984)-to estimate the effects of the policy.
Invasive species such as seaweeds often have a broad tolerance, allowing them to colonize novel habitats. During invasion, also new epibacteria can be formed on seaweeds, which have important chemo-ecological effects. Since UV-radiation (UVR) is one of the main factors affecting seaweeds and their epibacteria, we tested its effect on intertidal and subtidal thalli of the invasive seaweed Codium fragile from three sites and monitored photosynthesis, antioxidant activity and epibacteria.
