Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common and specific microvascular complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. Endothelial-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) underlies various chronic vascular diseases, while histone deacetylase 9 (HDAC9) is involved in the pathological process of cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and breast cancer. Recent evidence has shown that HDAC9 promotes EndoMT, thereby affecting the progression of atherosclerotic disease.

The development of tumors relies on lactate metabolic reprogramming to facilitate their unchecked growth and evade immune surveillance. This poses a significant challenge to the efficacy of antitumor immunity. To address this, a tumor-selective nano-dispatcher, PIMDQ/Syro-RNP, to enforce the immunotherapeutic effect through regulation of lactate metabolism and activation of toll-like receptors is developed.

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) is a key DNA damage sensor that is recruited to damaged sites after DNA strand breaks to initiate DNA repair. This is achieved by catalyzing attachment of ADP-ribose moieties, which are donated from NAD, on the amino acid residues of itself or other acceptor proteins. PARP inhibitors (PARPi) that inhibit PARP catalytic activity and induce PARP trapping are commonly used for treating -deficient breast and ovarian cancers through synergistic lethality.

Article Synopsis
  • Bipolar disorder (BD) shows strong genetic links, and finding new risk genes can help understand how the disease develops.
  • A study analyzed a Chinese family with BD, identifying a significant mutation in the GOLGB1 gene, linked to other cases of BD.
  • Experiments on neonatal mice showed that a lack of GOLGB1 affects behavior, leading to varied symptoms resembling both manic and depressive states found in BD patients, and impacts key brain signaling pathways.

  • - Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered effective for drug delivery but face challenges with drug capacity and safety; this study introduces MSC membrane-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN@M) as a solution.
  • - The integration of MSC membranes onto mesoporous silica nanoparticles improved stealth and reduced clearance by the immune system, allowing for better targeting and drug retention in cancerous tissues.
  • - When tested in mice with tumors, MSN@M demonstrated significantly enhanced drug loading, sustained release of doxorubicin (DOX), and effectively inhibited tumor growth while minimizing side effects, suggesting it could be a promising alternative for antitumor therapies.

Article Synopsis
  • Quercetin is a polyphenol that showed potential in reducing immobility in mice during tests designed to assess depressive behaviors.
  • In a study with LPS-challenged rats, quercetin improved bodyweight gain, increased preferences in behavioral tests, and reduced immobility, but had no effect on learning tasks or certain plasma markers.
  • The findings suggest that quercetin helps counteract depression-like behaviors and memory issues by normalizing expression levels of specific proteins related to brain health in key brain areas.
