A new species of the genus is described based on morphological comparisons and molecular analyses from specimens of a subterranean tributary of the Hongshui River, Lingyun County, Baise City, and a cave in Jinya Township, Fengshan County, Hechi City, Guangxi, China. Both morphological and molecular data support the validity of The new species can be distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characteristics: whole body except for head and area between pectoral-fin and pelvic-fin origin sparsely covered with minute scales; barbels elongate; five or six branched pectoral-fin rays and four branched pelvic-fin rays; vertebrae 4+42. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian-inference phylogenetic trees exhibited congruent topological structures, exhibiting high node support for the monophyly of (BPP = 1; BS = 100), which was clustered with the other congeners.

It is distinguished from congeners by the following combination of morphological features: no obvious anterior notch on the tip of the upper lip; 45-52 lateral-line scales; 18-21 pre-dorsal scales; two rows of pharyngeal teeth; a maxillary extending to or slightly beyond the vertical anterior margin of the orbit in adult males; a pectoral fin extending to the pelvic fin in adult males; nuptial tubercles on the cheeks and lower jaw of males, which are usually united basally to form a plate; uniform narrow pale pink cross-bars on trunk and two widening significantly on caudal peduncle. Recently described cave species of the genus have been discovered in southwestern China, suggesting that the diversity of the genus is severely underestimated and that there may be many undescribed species. In this work, four new species of the genus are described from southwestern Guizhou Province, China, namely Luo, Mao, Zhao, Xiao & Zhou, and Mao, Zhao, Yu, Xiao & Zhou, from Rongdu Town, Ceheng County, Guizhou, Yu, Luo, Lan, Xiao & Zhou, from Hongguo Town, Panzhou City, Guizhou, and Song, Luo, Lan, Zhao, Xiao & Zhou, from Xinglong Town, Anlong County, Guizhou. The Chang, 1935 genus of Asian warty newts is the second most diverse genus in the family Salamandridae, currently containing 14 recognized species from northern Vietnam to southwest-central and southern China. Although species of this genus have been included in previous phylogenetic studies, the origin and interspecific relationships of the genus are still not fully resolved, especially at key nodes in the phylogeny. In this study, we sequenced mitochondrial genomes and 32 nuclear genes from 27 samples belonging to 14 species to reconstruct the interspecific phylogenetic relationships within and explore its historical biogeography in southern China.
