Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is involved in many biogeochemical processes and plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems. Notable differences appear in land use types in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the distribution characteristics and optical properties of DOM and its response to natural and anthropogenic activities vary greatly in long-distance transport. This study systematically collected 84 water samples from the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin and used ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy combined with fluorescence region integration (FRI), and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to analyze the distributional and compositional characteristics of DOM in the Yangtze River Basin and to explore the response of DOM to natural and anthropogenic activities.

  • Wabu Lake is an important part of the Yangtze River to Huai River Water Diversion Project, making it necessary to assess heavy metal contamination for ecological safety.
  • Samples collected from 24 locations in the lake revealed that while surface water levels of heavy metals were mostly below safety limits, sediment levels for several metals exceeded background values significantly.
  • The study identified severe health risks from metals like Pb, Cd, and Cr, with main contamination sources linked to nearby industrial, agricultural, and residential activities.

Objectives: The diameter, area, and volume of the true lumen and false lumen (FL) have been measured in previous studies to evaluate the extent of DeBakey type I aortic dissection. However, these indicators have limitations because of the irregular shapes of the true and false lumens and the constant oscillation of intimal flap during systole and diastole. The ratio of arch lengths seems to be a more reliable indicator.

The Y-family DNA polymerases specialize in translesion DNA synthesis, which is essential for replicating damaged DNA. The Y-family polymerases, which are made up of four stable domains, exhibit extensive distributions of charged residues, and are responsible for the tight formation of the protein-DNA complex. However, it is still unclear how the electrostatic interactions influence the conformational dynamics of the polymerases.

This article aims to explore the effects and possible mechanism of miR-543 on small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) cells. The respective levels of miR-543 in lung carcinoma tissues, para-cancerous tissues, human normal lung cells MRC-9, and SCLC cells were detected by RT-qPCR. The proliferation, apoptosis, and migration of SCLC cells were detected after the miR-543 level in SCLC cells was altered by miRNA mimics and inhibitors.

In this work, the kinetic mechanisms of pyrolysis of cellulose with different physical structures were illustrated. The crystalline cellulose showed better thermal stability and required higher energy for decomposition with more concentrated reactions due to the highly ordered structure. The crystallinity of the ball milling and ionic liquid pretreated cellulose decreased and the structure was relatively loose and disordered, thereby reducing the thermal stability, so the global activation energy of both samples decreased and the intensive reaction caused by the collapse of structure was alleviated.

Objective: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of long non-coding RNA taurine up-regulated gene 1 (lncRNA TUG1) in the peripheral blood of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients.

Methods: With the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs: T-cells, B-cells and monocytes) collected from SLE patients and healthy controls, TUG1 expression was determined to identify the correlation with the clinicopathological features of SLE patients. Thereby, the diagnostic value of TUG1 expression in diagnosis of SLE was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

We aimed to know the effect of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibition on the kidney injury of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) mice. Pristane-induced SLE mice were treated with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC, 50 or 100 mg/kg), a NF-κB inhibitor. Histopathological changes were observed by hematoxylin & eosin, Masson and periodic schiff-methenamine stainings.

Solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is an important part of printed electrochemical gas sensors and are of value to electrochemical sensors. Here, a new type of SPE was prepared by dissolving a poly-vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix in a 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to immobilize 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM] [BF]), which was then used in a new electrochemical amperometric nitrogen dioxide sensor. The SPE was coated on a single electrode and attached to the electrode to construct a simple two-layer structure.

Article Synopsis
  • Long non-coding RNAs, particularly urothelial carcinoma-associated 1 (UCA1), are identified as significant regulators in cancer development and progression, with UCA1 acting as an oncogene in various tumors.
  • In renal cell carcinoma, UCA1 is overexpressed in cancer tissues compared to normal ones, and its high levels correlate with advanced disease stages and poor patient survival.
  • The study reveals that reducing UCA1 levels inhibits cancer cell growth and increases the expression of the p21 protein, suggesting that targeting UCA1 may provide a new treatment strategy for renal cell carcinoma patients.

Tailoring electromagnetically induced transparency with two different coupling mechanisms has been numerically demonstrated. The results show that EIT based on simultaneous electric resonance and magnetic resonance has relatively larger coupling distance compared with that based on electric resonance near field coupling to magnetic resonance. The relatively large coupling distance is due to the relatively small susceptibility change.

The breeding of domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) for human consumption has a long tradition in China. Infections that can affect the production of meat or even be transmitted from animals to humans are important to monitor, especially for public health reasons as well as for their impact on animal health. Thus, a total of 1,132 domestic rabbit sera from 4 regions in China were collected for serological screening for Encephalitozoon cuniculi and for Toxoplasma gondii by ELISA and modified agglutination test (MAT), respectively.

  • The aluminum cathode significantly improves in performance when a thin layer of lithium fluoride (LiF) is used in organic electronic devices, although the exact mechanisms are not completely understood.
  • Previous theories suggested that the interaction of lithium from LiF with aluminum leads to beneficial doping effects, resulting in the formation of aluminum fluoride (AlF3) as a byproduct.
  • This study investigates the reactions between aluminum and different LiF cluster sizes, discovering two primary reaction pathways that release lithium and produce AlF3, while offering new insights into the impact of the LiF interlayer on electronic applications.
