Purpose: To develop an automated method for segmenting and quantifying the choriocapillaris (CC) layer using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA), aimed at evaluating CC perfusion changes in diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients and facilitating clinical research.

Methods: We proposed a traditional image processing algorithm combining shadow compensation and intensity gradients to segment the CC layer in eyes at various stages of DR. The algorithm was refined for artifact removal in CC blood flow analysis.

Objective: To minimize local recurrence of tongue cancer, it is necessary to tackle the issues of radiotherapy resistance and sensitivity in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCCa). This study focuses on understanding how HOX transcript antisense intergenic RNA (HOTAIR) influences resistance to radiotherapy in TSCCa by modulating the Notch signaling pathway.

Methods: The TSCCa cells SCC9 and SCC25 were divided into six experimental groups: (1) 8 Gy irradiation group, (2) 8 Gy with negative control, (3) 8 Gy with silent HOTAIR, (4) 8 Gy with null control, (5) 8 Gy with overexpressing HOTAIR, and (6) 8 Gy with silent HOTAIR and Jagged1.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) plays a significant role in cancers of the head, neck, and anogenital areas. This study aimed to estimate the burden and trends of HPV-related cancers in 44 selected countries from 1990 to 2017. Data on cancers attributable to HPV infection from 1990 to 2017 were extracted from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) plus database.

Objective: This study aims to explore the impact of physical exercise on university students' life satisfaction and analyses the chain mediation effect of general self-efficacy and health literacy, providing empirical reference and theoretical foundation for the comprehensive enhancement and optimization of students' mental health.

Method: Based on data from the "China University Student Physical Activity and Health Tracking Survey" (CPAHLS-CS) 2024, the measurement scales used included the Physical Activity Rating Scale (PARS-3), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and the 9-item Short Form Health Literacy Scale (HLS-SF9). A total of 4575 valid samples were analyzed.

This study aimed to investigate the prognosis of adolescent patients with anterior disk displacement without reduction (ADDwoR) who were treated with disk repositioning through suturing or arthrocentesis plus hyaluronic acid (HA) combined with stabilization splint (SS). A total of 96 ADDwoR patients aged ranging from 12 to 18 years, were divided into two groups, including 52 patients in Group A (underwent disk repositioning by suturing) and 44 patients in Group B (underwent arthrocentesis plus HA combined with SS). Condylar height, disk length, maximum mouth opening (MMO), maximal protrusive movement (PM), left/right maximal lateral movement (LLM/RLM) and visual analogue scale (VAS) pain scores were comparatively analyzed between the two groups before and after treatment.

Objective: While ferritinophagy is believed to play a significant role in the development of periodontitis, the exact mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the biomarkers associated with ferritinophagy in periodontitis using transcriptomic data.

Methods: Two periodontitis-related datasets from Gene Expression Omnibus, GSE10334, and GSE16134, served as the training and validation cohorts, respectively.

Osteoradionecrosis of the jaws (ORNJ) is a pernicious complication of radiation therapy that significantly affects the quality of life of patients with head and neck cancer. The present study aims to investigate the risk factors for the clinical prognosis of ORNJ in the same scenario. A cross-sectional study was designed and implemented in a tertiary teaching hospital from January 2005 to December 2020.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a new combined treatment approach using arthrocentesis, hyaluronic acid (HA) injection, mandibular manipulation (MM), and the Twin-Block appliance (TBA) for managing acute anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDwoR). A retrospective cross-sectional study was designed. Thirty-seven patients (38 joints) diagnosed with acute ADDwoR were treated with arthrocentesis plus HA combined with MM and TBA in turn from January 2022 to December 2023.

Anxiety disorder is a major symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with a comorbidity rate of ~40%. However, the neural mechanisms of the emergence of anxiety in ASD remain unclear. In our study, we found that hyperactivity of basolateral amygdala (BLA) pyramidal neurons (PNs) in Shank3 InsG3680 knock-in (InsG3680) mice is involved in the development of anxiety.

Mitochondria, as the powerhouse of the cell, play a vital role in maintaining cellular energy homeostasis and are known to be a primary target of cadmium (Cd) toxicity. The improper targeting of proteins to mitochondria can compromise the normal functions of the mitochondria. However, the precise mechanism by which protein localization contributes to the development of mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Cd is still not fully understood.

Over the last decade, accumulating evidence has suggested that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a significant role in the tumor development. This commentary wishes to highlight the findings by You, et al. that M1-like TAMs could cascade a mesenchymal/stem-like phenotype of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) via the IL6/Stat3/THBS1 feedback loop.

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is a ubiquitous organosulfur molecule in marine environments with important roles in stress tolerance, global carbon and sulfur cycling, and chemotaxis. It is the main precursor of the climate active gas dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which is the greatest natural source of bio‑sulfur transferred from ocean to atmosphere. Alteromonas sp.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), responsible for widespread viral hepatitis, infects approximately 2.3 billion individuals globally, with a significant mortality burden in Asia. The virus, primarily transmitted through contaminated water and undercooked meat, is often underdiagnosed, particularly in immunocompromised patients.

The impact of microplastics (MPs) as a new type of pollutant on water pollution has become a research hotspot. To explore the response relationship between the abundance of MPs and nitrogen metabolism function in a freshwater environment, Lake Ulansuhai was used as the research object; the abundance of MPs in the water was detected using a Zeiss microscope, and the distribution characteristics of nitrogen metabolism functional bacteria and functional genes in the water were analyzed using metagenomics sequencing. The correlation analysis method was used to explore the relationship between the abundance of MPs and nitrogen metabolism functional microorganisms and nitrogen metabolism functional genes.
