Objective: Current challenges in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment include the invasive nature of endoscopic evaluation, the gold standard for diagnosis, and the limited prognostic value of traditional inflammatory markers such as CRP and IL-6. This study aimed to explore the potential role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) as biomarkers for the diagnosis, disease monitoring, and prognosis of IBD.

Methods: A total of 100 patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and 100 healthy controls were recruited between June 2020 and September 2022.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most prevalent cause of cancer-related mortality and is increasing in younger individuals. Chemotherapy, a crucial adjuvant systemic therapy for CRC management, often leads to resistance through poorly characterized underlying molecular mechanisms. The long noncoding RNA is highly expressed in CRC and promotes tumor proliferation and invasion, prompting us to hypothesize that may play a crucial role in the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) resistance in CRC.

Acne-induced macular hyperpigmentation (AMH) is a common issue among patients with highly melanated skin, particularly those with Fitzpatrick Skin Types (FST) V - VI, which includes nonwhite patients with 'brown' and 'black' skin types. Despite the significant physical, emotional, and social harm caused by AMH, many clinical trials either fail to report FST data or do not include patients with FST V to VI. This scoping review summarizes current research on AMH treatment for patients with FST V to VI.

Otolaryngologists frequently serve as the first touchpoint for patients presenting with dermatologic conditions of the head and neck. This study aims to identify and quantify gaps in dermatologic training among otolaryngology residents, and to assess their diagnostic accuracy in comparison to dermatology residents. It comprised 14 multiple-choice questions focused on common dermatologic diagnoses related to the head and neck.

Article Synopsis
  • Telomere biology disorders (TBD) are inherited conditions linked to short telomeres, with dyskeratosis congenita (DC) being a severe phenotype characterized by various physical symptoms.
  • A case study details a 2-year-old girl with specific symptoms (reticulated pigmentary changes and Terry's nails) who was found to have a TERT gene variant and short telomeres, but did not show the full range of TBD features.
  • The report emphasizes the need for awareness and diagnosis of TBD, even in patients who exhibit only mild or limited symptoms of classic DC.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effectiveness of using alternate titanium clips for closing wounds after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with gastric mucosal lesions, collecting data from 846 patients over a 10-year period.
  • - Patients were categorized into three groups based on their wound closure status: completely closed (using clips), partially closed, and unclosed, with their postoperative complication rates and healing times compared.
  • - Results showed that while the completely closed group had a lower rate of delayed postoperative bleeding (2.1%), this was not statistically significant when compared to the unclosed group (5.5%), but significantly lower than the partially closed group (9.4%), especially for lesions in the lower part

Many baby cleansers are promoted as hypoallergic products; however, these claims are not typically validated. This study assessed the 50 best-selling baby cleansers from online retailer Amazon for potential allergens. We found that the presence of most marketing claims, including "hypoallergenic" or "allergy-tested," did not correlate with the number of potential allergens in a cleanser.

To improve the poor water solubility and oral bioavailability of tyrosol, novel tyrosol liposomes (Tyr-LPs) were prepared by pH-driven method. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Tyr-LPs were successfully encapsulated and tyrosol was in an amorphous state in liposomes. When tyrosol content in Tyr-LP was 1.

Improved treatment outcomes for non-melanoma skin cancers can be achieved if Vitamin D (Vit D) is used as a neoadjuvant prior to photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the mechanisms for this effect are unclear. Vit D elevates protoporphyrin (PpIX) levels within tumor cells, but also exerts immune-modulatory effects.

This paper presents a technique for high sensitivity measurement of singlet oxygen luminescence generated during photodynamic therapy (PDT) and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on skin. The high measurement sensitivity is achieved by using a computational spectroscopy (CS) approach that provides improved photon detection efficiency compared to spectral filtering methodology. A solid-state InGaAs photodiode is used as the CS detector, which significantly reduces system cost and improves robustness compared to photomultiplier tubes.

Objectives: Endoscopic diagnosis of invasion depth of superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC) by white-light imaging (WLI) modality remains difficult. This study aims to clarify WLI-based features which are predictive for invasion depth of SESCC.

Methods: A two-phase study was performed by enrolling 1288 patients with 1396 SESCC lesions.

Propionic acid (PA) is a water-soluble substance that has been shown to be beneficial for improving colon-related diseases. However, its appliance as a nutraceutical ingredient is hampered by its volatility, irritating odor, and easy absorption in the stomach and small intestine. A chitosan solution containing propionic acid was dispersed in a palm oil/corn oil mixture with polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) to form PA-loaded water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions.

Background: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) assisted white light imaging (WLI) detection systems for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC) is limited by training with images from one specific endoscopy platform.

Methods: In this study, we developed an AI system with a convolutional neural network (CNN) model using WLI images from Olympus and Fujifilm endoscopy platforms. The training dataset consisted of 5892 WLI images from 1283 patients, and the validation dataset included 4529 images from 1224 patients.
