Parabolic flight serves as an important terrestrial analog to study acute physiological changes in microgravity without the need for space travel. During a parabolic flight, alternating hypergravity and microgravity phases, lasting up to 40 seconds, enable research into ophthalmic changes. In this review, we discuss the application of parabolic flight as a platform to study microgravity-related changes that might impact ophthalmology including intraocular pressure, intracranial pressure, choroidal blood flow, and modified eye movement patterns.

To study the influence of ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography (FA) on the diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Ten experts in DR completed an online survey in which they were asked to diagnose and manage DR cases using different imaging modalities. Experts independently reviewed 20 cases of DR and provided a diagnosis and management plan for each case, first based on ultra-widefield color-free and red-free images alone and again with the corresponding ultra-widefield FA images.

Globally, management of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is limited by a shortage of ophthalmologists who are adequately trained in identifying disease due to limited exposure in ophthalmology residencies and fellowships. We review the current state of ROP education and training and propose strategies to addressing the ROP workforce shortage. Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic review was performed using PubMed, Embase, and SCOPUS.

Purpose: To report and compare the incidence, prevalence, and presentation of herpetic eye disease (HED) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in an urban hospital system and assess related COVID-19 infection or vaccination prior to presentation.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients with herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratitis and HSV uveitis based on ICD-10 diagnosis codes at the University of Illinois Hospitals from before the COVID-19 pandemic (May 1, 2018, to February 29, 2020) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021) was performed. Imaging the film formation process of waterborne barrier coatings in situ with nanoscopic resolution is very challenging, which limits the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and rational design of the materials. Here this challenge is tackled using in situ cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM) in combination with electron tomography (cryoET), which allows 3D imaging of the process with <1 nm resolution. By monitoring the film formation process of poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) ionomer dispersion, onion-like nano-aggregates are captured.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a mature B-cell lymphoma associated with cyclin D family rearrangements and typically expresses CD5 and cyclin D1. Epstein-Barr virus- (EBV-) positive MCL is rare, and the role of EBV infection and its transformation in MCL remains unclear. We present a case of CD5-negative classic MCL that progressed to an EBV + pleomorphic MCL six years after the initial diagnosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reason that diabetic retinopathy (DR) is delayed from the onset of diabetes (DM) in diabetic mice. To this end, we tested the hypothesis that the deleterious effects of DM are initially tolerated because endogenous antioxidative defense is elevated and thereby confers resistance to oxidative stress-induced death. We found that this was indeed the case in both type 1 DM (T1D) and type 2 DM (T2D) mouse models.

Dendritic spines are highly dynamic and changes in their density, size, and shape underlie structural synaptic plasticity in cognition and memory. Fine membranous protrusions of spines, termed dendritic spinules, can contact neighboring neurons or glial cells and are positively regulated by neuronal activity. Spinules are thinner than filopodia, variable in length, and often emerge from large mushroom spines.

Limbal stem cells constitute an important cell population required for regeneration of the corneal epithelium. If insults to limbal stem cells or their niche are sufficiently severe, a disease known as limbal stem cell deficiency occurs. In the absence of functioning limbal stem cells, vision-compromising conjunctivalization of the corneal epithelium occurs, leading to opacification, inflammation, neovascularization, and chronic scarring.

Mixed phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) consists of a leukemia of two different lineages (myeloid, T, and/or B) co-occurring in the same tissue. KMT2A-rearrangement is rare and usually seen in B/myeloid MPAL. We report a unique case of T/myeloid MPAL with a t(v;11q23) KMT2A-rearrangement, with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in the bone marrow but concurrent T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) in lymph node and skin.
