Inhospital ischemic stroke has more mortality, more disability, and greater severity compared to community-onset stroke. We present a case of a 40-year-old male who reported to the emergency room (ER) with breathlessness and later developed a stroke during the course of his stay in the hospital. We noted multiple comorbidities and risk factors that could have resulted in the stroke.

Uterine bleeding that is abnormal in timing, duration, or quantity affects nearly one-third of women and carries a substantial financial and quality-of-life burden. An estimated 5% of ED visits are for vaginal bleeding, and 1% of those patients will have a life-threatening cause that must be identified. Emergency clinicians need to have a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology and etiologies of abnormal uterine bleeding to manage and treat these patients.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: The objective was to bridge the relative educational gap for newly matched emergency medicine preinterns between Match Day and the start of internship by implementing an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestone (ACGME)-based virtual case curriculum over the social media platform Slack.
Methods: We designed a Milestone-based curriculum of 10 emergency department clinical cases and used Slack to implement it. An instructor was appointed for each participating institution to lead the discussion and encourage collaboration among preinterns.
Introduction In the emergency department, the diagnosis of an Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) is reportedly missed in greater than 20% of cases. A limited number of studies evaluate the use of cadaver models as a potential ultrasound teaching and training modality. We hypothesize that emergency medicine residents can effectively utilize point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) on cadaver models and a focused teaching intervention to assess their ability to detect ATRs.

The SVI is a video-recorded, uni-directional interview consisting of six questions designed to assess interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism.
