Heart Center, Department of Cardiology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, University of Cologne, 50937 Cologne, Germany; Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), University of Cologne, 50937 Cologne, Germany. Electronic address:

Obesity, a main driver of cardiovascular morbidity, contributes to endothelial dysfunction and inflammation in adipose tissues. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) surrounds arteries and influences vascular function. In obesity, immune cells, including myeloperoxidase (MPO)-releasing myeloid cells, accumulate in PVAT.

Several studies have examined a potential relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease. This article aims to update the evidence for a potential association by summarizing the evidence for causality between periodontitis and comorbidities linked to cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. We additionally discuss the evidence for periodontal therapy as a means to improved management of these comorbidities, with the larger goal of examining the value of periodontal therapy on reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.

Division of Cardiology, Pneumology, and Intensive Medical Care, Department of Internal Medicine I (M.B.E., A.H., E.F., J.W., D.H., T.K., S.M.-W., P.C.S.), Friedrich-Schiller-University, Germany.

Background: Reduced exercise capacity in patients with heart failure (HF) could be partially explained by skeletal muscle dysfunction. We compared skeletal muscle function, structure, and metabolism among clinically stable outpatients with HF with preserved ejection fraction, HF with reduced ejection fraction, and healthy controls (HC). Furthermore, the molecular, metabolic, and clinical profile of patients with reduced muscle endurance was described.

Various Maillard reaction systems were established to investigate the effect of maize bran feruloylated oligosaccharides (FOs) on the formation of both endogenous and exogenous advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) under different pH values. The formation of AGEs and four kinds of dicarbonyl compounds (glyoxal, methylglyoxal, 3-deoxyglucosulose, 2,3-butanedione) were determined by fluorescence spectrophotometry and HPLC, respectively. Results showed that maize bran FOs effectively inhibited the production of fluorescent AGEs.

January 2019

Department of Neurology and Neurophysiology, University Medical Center Freiburg, University of Freiburg, Breisacher Str. 64, 79106 Freiburg, Germany. Electronic address:

Background: Apart from inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, ADHD in childhood presents with an impairment of motor coordination and balance functions. Until now, literature is scarce about sensorimotor deficits in adult ADHD. This is a pilot study that identifies and quantifies the role of sensory, motor, and central adaptation mechanisms for adult ADHD patients' sensorimotor deficits in a systematic way, using postural control.

Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, United States of America.

Power demands are set to increase by two-fold within the current century and a high fraction of that demand should be met by carbon free sources. Among the renewable energies, solar energy is among the fastest growing; therefore, a comprehensive and accurate design methodology for solar systems and how they interact with the local environment is vital. This paper addresses the environmental effects of solar panels on an unirrigated pasture that often experiences water stress.

Turmeric, a spice that has long been recognized for its medicinal properties, has received interest from both the medical/scientific world and from culinary enthusiasts, as it is the major source of the polyphenol curcumin. It aids in the management of oxidative and inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and hyperlipidemia. It may also help in the management of exercise-induced inflammation and muscle soreness, thus enhancing recovery and performance in active people.

The role of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity in the fine motor coordination in children with ADHD.

Res Dev Disabil

October 2017

Departamento de Psicología Básica y Metodología, Universidad de Murcia, Murcia, Spain.

Objective: Deficits in fine motor coordination have been suggested to be associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, despite the negative impact of poor fine motor skills on academic achievement, researchers have paid little attention to this problem. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between ADHD dimensions and fine motor performance.

Pedal Edema as an Indicator of Early Heart Failure in the Community: Prevalence and Associations With Cardiac Structure/Function and Natriuretic Peptides (MESA [Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis]).

Circ Heart Fail

December 2016

From the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence (J.Y., W.Q., S.A.) and Department of Epidemiology (A.B.), Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC; Department of Cardiology and Radiology, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD (J.A.C.L.); Kantonsspital Graubuenden Clinic of Rad

Background: The prevalence of pedal edema (PE) and its associations with abnormal cardiac structure/function, natriuretic peptides, and incident heart failure (HF) is unknown, especially in community-dwelling adults without a history of cardiovascular disease.

Methods And Results: Out of 5004 MESA (Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) participants who had cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, 4196 had complete data and were included in this analysis (3501 for the right ventricle analysis). Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard analyses were used to assess the associations among self-reported PE, 2-pillow orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, left and right ventricular structure and function, natriuretic peptide levels, and incident HF.

The ancient grain is becoming enormously popular in modern food regimen in many countries; the higher proportion of α-linolenic acid makes chia the superb source of omega-3 fatty (about 65 % of the oil content). Omega-3 fatty acid has been associated with a large number of physiological functions in human body. Chia seed is a potential source of antioxidants with the presence of chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol which are believed to have cardiac, hepatic protective effects, anti-ageing and anti-carcinogenic characteristics.

Non-fasting triglyceridemia is much closer associated to cardiovascular risk compared to fasting triglyceridemia. We hypothesized that there would be acute differential effects of four common dietary proteins (cod protein, whey isolate, gluten, and casein) on postprandial lipemia in obese non-diabetic subjects. To test the hypothesis we conducted a randomized, acute clinical intervention study with crossover design.

The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of chia seed (Salvia hispanica L) in promoting weight loss and altering disease risk factors in overweight adults. The hypothesis was that the high dietary fiber and alpha-linolenic (ALA) contents of chia seed would induce a small but significant decrease in body weight and fat and improve disease risk factors. Subjects were randomized to chia seed (CS) and placebo (P) groups, and under single-blinded procedures, ingested 25 g CS or P supplements mixed in 0.
