Understanding ultrasound neuromodulation using a computationally efficient and interpretable model of intramembrane cavitation.

Objective: Low-intensity focused ultrasound stimulation (LIFUS) emerges as an attracting technology for noninvasive modulation of neural circuits, yet the underlying action mechanisms remain unclear. The neuronal intramembrane cavitation excitation (NICE) model suggests that LIFUS excites neurons through a complex interplay between microsecond-scale mechanical oscillations of so-called sonophores in the plasma membrane and the development of a millisecond-scale electrical response. This model predicts cell-type-specific responses that correlate indirectly with experimental data, but it is computationally expensive and difficult to interpret, which hinders its potential validation.

We present a methodology for building biologically inspired, soft microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. Our strategy combines several advanced techniques including programmable colloidal self-assembly, light-harvesting with plasmonic nanotransducers, and in situ polymerization of compliant hydrogel mechanisms. We synthesize optomechanical microactuators using a template-assisted microfluidic approach in which gold nanorods coated with thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (pNIPMAM) polymer function as nanoscale building blocks.

Here we present an electroencephalographic (EEG) collection of 71-channel datasets recorded from 14 subjects (7 males, 7 females, aged 20-40 years) while performing a visual working memory task with a T set of 150 Independent Component Analysis (ICA) decompositions by Extended Infomax using RELICA, each on a bootstrap resampling of the data. These data are linked to the paper "Applying dimension reduction to EEG data by Principal Component Analysis reduces the quality of its subsequent Independent Component decomposition" [1]. Independent components (ICs) are clustered within subject and thereby associated with a quality index (QIc) measure of their stability to data resampling.

Herein a strategy is presented for the assembly of both static and stimuli-responsive single-molecule heterostructures, where the distance and electronic coupling between an individual functional nanomoiety and a carbon nanostructure are tuned via the use of DNA linkers. As proof of concept, the formation of 1:1 nanohybrids is controlled, where single quantum dots (QDs) are tethered to the ends of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in solution with DNA interconnects of different lengths. Photoluminescence investigations-both in solution and at the single-hybrid level-demonstrate the electronic coupling between the two nanostructures; notably this is observed to progressively scale, with charge transfer becoming the dominant process as the linkers length is reduced.

Context: Human cross-sectional and animal studies have shown an association of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic diseases, but no human experimental study has investigated whether BPA alters insulin/C-peptide secretion.

Design: Men and postmenopausal women (without diabetes) were orally administered either the vehicle or a BPA dose of 50 µg/kg body weight, which has been predicted by US regulators (Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency) to be the maximum, safe daily oral BPA dose over the lifetime. Multilayer 3D electrodes for neural implants.

Objective: In many applications, multielectrode arrays employed as neural implants require a high density and a high number of electrodes to precisely record and stimulate the activity of the nervous system while preserving the overall size of the array.

Approach: Here we present a multilayer and three-dimensional (3D) electrode array, together with its manufacturing method, enabling a higher electrode density and a more efficient signal transduction with the biological tissue.

Main Results: The 3D structure of the electrode array allows for a multilayer placement of the interconnects within a flexible substrate, it narrows the probe size per the same number of electrodes, and it maintains the electrode contacts at the same level within the tissue.

Objective: The aim of the paper is to objectively demonstrate that amputees implanted with intraneural interfaces are truly able to feel a sensation in the phantom hand by recording "phantom" somatosensory evoked potentials from the corresponding brain areas.

Methods: We implanted four transverse intrafascicular multichannel electrodes, available with percutaneous connections to a multichannel electrical stimulator, in the median and ulnar nerves of two left trans-radial amputees. Proteins undergo both cold and heat denaturation, but often cold denaturation cannot be detected because it occurs at temperatures below water freezing. Proteins undergoing detectable cold as well as heat denaturation yield a reliable curve of protein stability. Here we use bacterial IscU, an essential and ancient protein involved in iron cluster biogenesis, to show an important example of unbiased cold denaturation, based on electrostatic frustration caused by a dualism between iron-sulfur cluster binding and the presence of a functionally essential electrostatic gate.
