Amid the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the EU's Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR), which aims to restore degraded areas in the coming decades, post-mining sites must be integrated into biodiversity and ecosystem recovery strategies as key contributors. While mining, quarrying, and other extractive activities have considerable environmental impacts, they also present massive opportunities to create valuable habitats, support biodiversity, guide restoration efforts, and contribute to conservation. A strong foundation of scientific and practical knowledge is already in place, yet implementation gaps persist, and regulatory frameworks remain under-utilised for restoring these degraded areas.

Aims: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, significantly impacting healthcare systems and individual lives. This pragmatic review focuses on the assessment of CVD utilizing traditional and emerging risk factors that provide a basis for personalized medicine and precision nutrition, highlighting the knowledge and application of these insights for accurate risk diagnosis, individualized interventions, and precise outcome/evaluation prognosis.
Data Synthesis: Critical biochemical markers such as lipid metabolism signatures, inflammatory molecules, endocrine mediators, homeostatic signals (including omics data), and lifestyle factors such as unhealthy dietary habits, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol abuse, along with anthropometric variables and body composition measurements, play a pivotal role in assessing and managing CVD.

Gasification has emerged as a promising platform to cope with recalcitrant organic waste within the framework of biomass-based biorefineries, producing syngas that can be fermented into valuable bioproducts. Despite its potential, syngas fermentation is based predominantly on pure cultures, which faces significant challenges, including the limited portfolio of generated compounds (primarily acetate and ethanol) and their low productivity. To address these bottlenecks, the potential of microbial consortia as effective platforms for syngas conversion has been evaluated.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a construct that includes a range of connected abilities linked to the understanding of others' mental states. During the last three decades, ToM development has been studied extensively in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals and performances compared to the typically hearing (TH) population. Given the advances in the early diagnosis of deafness, interventions, and hearing devices over this period, variations in task performance among DHH participants might have been reduced.

Anaerobic fermentation (AF) efficiency is highly influenced by temperature, and operational disruptions in industrial settings can lead to severe process failure. In this study, AF of food wastes (FWs) was subjected to a temperature drop from 25 °C to 15 °C to elucidate AF behaviour and proper recovery strategies. The temperature decrease caused a marked decline in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from 23.

Introduction: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people over 55 years of age globally, being neovascular AMD (nAMD) its most aggressive form. Its treatment consists of the use of drugs that block vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF). Proteomics may allow the identification of differentially expressed proteins between responders and non-responders to each anti-VEGF drug.

Background: The education of health science students requires the use of assessment tools that provide valid and reliable information about the learning of practical skills. The objective and structured clinical evaluation (OSCE) method has been shown to be useful, but it can cause stress and anxiety, which may increase after COVID-19 affects final academic performance. To test whether the OSCE induces an anxiety response in participants, to analyse the cause of this emotional response and to examine the relationship between OSCE scores and students' final performance.

Sugarcane vinasse, a major by-product of ethanol production, poses environmental and health risks due to its high sulfate content, promoting severe hydrogen sulfide (HS) formation (up to 50,000 ppm) during acidogenic fermentation. The resulting HS and high carbon dioxide (CO) levels in off-gas create serious hazards, often leading to conventional desulfurization systems' clogging and high maintenance. This study is the first to investigate a Chloroidium-based combined microalgal-bacterial (CMB) system for simultaneous, high-strength HS abatement and CO sequestration from these challenging vinasse fermentation off-gas streams.

Intact pulse cotyledon cells are known for their intact cellular structure and dense protein matrix, leading to slower starch digestibility. However, the retrogradation and digestibility of retrograded intracellular starch has rarely been investigated, and our preliminary results indicated the difficulty of intracellular starch retrogradation. To test mechanistic principles of intracellular starch retrogradation, intact pulse cells were extracted and treated with protease followed by pancreatic α-amylase (0-20 min) and pullulanase (24 h) prehydrolysis, and then controlled retrogradation (4 °C, 5 d).
