Phototherapeutic methods like photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodecaging have emerged as promising modalities for cancer treatment. Phototherapeutics are activated by light and thereby generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), heat, or release a caged, toxic carry-on. Their distinct advantages of spatial and temporal control preserve healthy tissue while promising a minimal invasive alternative to traditional therapeutic approaches.

Colchicine poisoning in livestock presents a significant challenge for dairy farming, particularly in regions where Colchicum autumnale (autumn crocus) is prevalent in pastures. This case report describes an incident on an organic dairy farm in Eastern Switzerland where Brown Swiss cattle showed clinical signs after consuming freshly mown meadow forage containing autumn crocus leaves. The ingestion of this highly toxic plant led to severe effects such as apathy, hypothermia, and reduced milk production, which required immediate veterinary intervention.

A growing literature examines how economic threat affects support for anti-establishment parties. While most existing work focuses on transforming labor markets as a source of anxiety, we advance the literature by studying changes in urban development and rent price appreciation. Our analysis examines the case of Germany, the country with the highest share of rental housing in the European Union.

Effective Dynamics of Local Observables for Extended Fermi Gases in the High-Density Regime.

Institute of Mathematics, University of Zurich, Winterthurerstrasse 190, 8057 Zurich, Switzerland.

We give a rigorous derivation of the Hartree equation for the many-body dynamics of pseudo-relativistic Fermi systems at high density , on arbitrarily large domains, at zero temperature. With respect to previous works, we show that the many-body evolution can be approximated by the Hartree dynamics locally, proving convergence of the expectation of observables that are supported in regions with fixed volume, independent of . The result applies to initial data describing fermionic systems at equilibrium confined in arbitrarily large domains, under the assumption that a suitable local Weyl-type estimate holds true.

Background: The Hintermann osteotomy (HOT) is one type of calcaneal lengthening osteotomy during progressive collapsing foot deformity surgery. The entry point on the lateral wall of the calcaneus is critical because it affects the direction and depth of the osteotomy. Accurate osteotomy placement can be technically demanding, and joint facets can sustain damage in up to 50% of the cases.

Background: Research on ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) radiation therapy has indicated its potential to spare normal tissue while maintaining equivalent tumor control compared to conventional treatments. First clinical trials are underway. The randomized phase II/III FEATHER clinical trial at the Paul Scherrer Institute in collaboration with the University of Zurich Animal Hospital is one of the first curative domestic animal trials to be attempted, and it is designed to provide a good example for human trials.

Machine perfusion is an emerging and transformative technology for dynamic organ preservation, assessment and repair. Whereas allografts continuously degrade during static cold storage, short-term perfusion can preserve high-quality organs for hours, enabling assessment, regional transport and improved logistics. Long-term perfusion for multiple days might extend the potential of clinical machine perfusion in the future, allowing for the assessment, reconditioning and repair of marginal or injured grafts for which more time is needed.

Importance: When randomized trials are unavailable or not feasible, observational studies can be used to answer causal questions about the comparative effects of interventions by attempting to emulate a hypothetical pragmatic randomized trial (target trial). Published guidance to aid reporting of these studies is not available.

Objective: To develop consensus based guidance for reporting observational studies performed to estimate causal effects by explicitly emulating a target trial.

Many microorganisms can degrade alkanes, using them as carbon source. The first and key step in alkane utilization is its hydroxylation, which requires a catalytic membrane-bound monooxygenase, a soluble rubredoxin and a soluble rubredoxin reductase. By comparing the phenotype of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain TBCF10839 with an isogenic mutant that carries a plasposon within the rubredoxin reductase gene rubB (PA5349) and the complemented mutant, we report multiple, yet unknown roles of rubredoxin reductase in the physiology of P.

The embryonic transcription factor TBXT (brachyury) drives chordoma, a spinal neoplasm without effective drug therapies. TBXT's regulatory network is poorly understood, and strategies to disrupt its activity for therapeutic purposes are lacking. We developed designed ankyrin repeat proteins that block TBXT-DNA binding (T-DARPins).

Background: Pacing in ultra-triathlon has been investigated by analyzing lap times from Double to Deca Iron ultra-triathlon for World Cup races but not for a World Championship. The present study aimed to investigate pacing in ultra-triathletes competing in the fastest and largest World Championship in Quintuple Iron ultra-triathlon ever held in history.

Methods: A total of 11 female and 24 male finishers who completed the 2024 Quintuple Ultra Triathlon World Championship in Colmar, France, were analyzed.

Sexual function problems are prevalent in both women and men and are linked to individual and dyadic factors. While the connection between sexual self-esteem and sexual function problems is well-established, the combined influence of individual and relational aspects of sexual self-esteem on sexual function problems in couples is not yet understood. This study investigated whether individual or dyadic factors of sexual self-esteem show stronger associations with sexual function problems in a non-clinical sample.

Yearning is a core symptom of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), typically manifesting as vivid counterfactual thoughts and bittersweet emotions. However, current self-report measures fail to capture the dynamic nature of yearning and are often compromised by social desirability bias. This highlights the critical need for accurate and objective tools to assess this complex emotional experience.

Nanopore- and AI-empowered microbial viability inference.

Gigascience

January 2025

Helmholtz AI, Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, 85764 Neuherberg, Germany.

Background: The ability to differentiate between viable and dead microorganisms in metagenomic data is crucial for various microbial inferences, ranging from assessing ecosystem functions of environmental microbiomes to inferring the virulence of potential pathogens from metagenomic analysis. Established viability-resolved genomic approaches are labor-intensive as well as biased and lacking in sensitivity.

Results: We here introduce a new fully computational framework that leverages nanopore sequencing technology to assess microbial viability directly from freely available nanopore signal data.

Calcium dobesilate has recently been used for treating lameness in horses because it enhances microvascular processes and reduces intraosseous pressure. Lameness caused by disorders in bone metabolism and increased intraosseous pressure, such as navicular disease, osseous cyst-like lesions and pedal bone oedema, are commonly treated with rest, anti-inflammatory agents and surgery. Calcium dobesilate has the potential to influence the pathophysiology of these diseases, thereby improving healing.
