Brexpiprazole is a second-generation antipsychotic with multiple indications, including the treatment of schizophrenia. As a partial dopamine agonist, brexpiprazole differs from most other antipsychotics, yet uncertainties about its full mechanism of action have led to some ambiguity among prescribers. To address this gap, an international panel of psychiatric experts was organized and convened with funding from Otsuka Pharmaceutical Europe Ltd and H.

To enhance performance, increase resilience and prevent injuries, training and testing (T&T) are the most important strategies for preparing athletes for the demands of their sport. However, for competitive snow sports such as alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding, there is little evidence and a lack of international harmonisation of current best practices. This consensus statement, commissioned by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), aims to provide recommendations for the physical and psychological T&T of competitive alpine and freestyle skiers and snowboarders within National Ski and Snowboard Associations.

Exploring the structure of the school curriculum with graph neural networks.

School curricula guide the daily learning activities of millions of students. They embody the understanding of the education experts who designed them of how to organize the knowledge that students should acquire in a way that is optimal for learning. This can be viewed as a learning 'theory' which is, nevertheless, rarely put to the test.

Airport/seaport and autochthonous malaria in Europe from 1969 to 2022: A systematic review.

Background: In the context of this paper, airport/seaport malaria denotes the accidental relocation by air or sea of a malaria infected mosquito to Europe, a non-endemic area, the survival of the transported mosquito and subsequent blood meal and infection of a local person. Autochthonous malaria refers to locally transmitted cases of malaria in Europe.

Methods: The systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023444243).

History of the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.

The history of the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (EUNOS) dates to 1993, when the first biennial meeting was held in Zurich, Switzerland. Fifteen more meetings followed in the years thereafter, and during these 31 years EUNOS developed into a thriving professional society serving its members and fulfilling the vision of both its funders Alfred Huber and Adolphe Neetens.

Inherent single-cell heterogeneity of the transcriptional response to hypoxia in cancer cells.

Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a master regulator of cancer cell adaptation to tumor hypoxia and is involved in cancer progression. Single-cell (sc) differences in the HIF response allow for tumor evolution and cause therapy resistance. These sc-differences are usually ascribed to tumor microenvironmental differences and/or clonal (epi)genetic variability.

Improving the Conduct of Health-Related Research in Schools.

Background: Schools serve not only as centers of education but also as critical environments for social development and promoting health and well-being of children and adolescents. Conducting health-related research in school settings offers valuable opportunities to identify current health challenges and assess preventive and interventional strategies.

Reperfusion failure after successful thrombectomy of large vessel occlusion stroke: clinical and imaging evidence.

Introduction: Reperfusion failure (RF) describes a condition in which patients suffering a large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke present insufficient tissue reperfusion and recovery despite optimal mechanical thrombectomy (MT) results. Approximately 50% of patients suffering from LVO are affected. Our current understanding of the underlying pathomechanisms is limited and mostly based on rodent models.

Gas phase water-initiated droplet-assisted growth and shaping (DAGS) synthesis of poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) (PECA) nanostructures.

The DAGS bottom-up method employs water nanodroplets as 'templates' for the fabrication of diverse 1D polymeric nanostructures. Herein, we successfully applied this approach in the gas phase to obtain poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) nanofibres (PECA-NF) with a diameter ranging from 137 to 721 nm. Their 1D growth was unveiled using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Hemoglobin levels and frailty status in generally healthy and active community-dwelling adults age 70 years and older in the three-year DO-HEALTH study.

While frailty and anemia are prevalent conditions in aging linked to adverse outcomes, their relationship remains understudied in generally healthy older adults. We conducted a post-hoc observational study among all participants of DO-HEALTH, the largest European clinical trial designed to support healthy aging. Our analysis examined whether baseline hemoglobin levels and anemia are associated with being at least pre-frail at baseline and any yearly follow-up time point over three years.

ESCMID workshop: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Medical Microbiology Diagnostics.

Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offer significant potential to transform medical microbiology diagnostics, improving pathogen identification, antimicrobial susceptibility prediction and outbreak detection. To address these opportunities and challenges, the ESCMID workshop, "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Medical Microbiology Diagnostics", was held in Zurich, Switzerland, from June 2-5, 2025. The course featured expert lectures, practical sessions and panel discussions covering foundational ML concepts and deep learning architectures, data interoperability, quality control processes, model development and validation strategies.

Background: COVID-19 is still a significant health concern worldwide. B cell responses to COVID-19 have been extensively studied in acute severe disease, but less so during extended follow-up or mild disease. Persisting immunological changes together with herpesvirus reactivations during acute COVID-19 have been suggested as contributing factors for post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC).

Although the terms personalized medicine and precision medicine are frequently utilized interchangeably, it is essential to delineate the subtle distinctions between them.

Scalable Acid-Aided Lysis of Skin Samples Improves Proteome Coverage.

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is an evolving tool for comprehensive proteomic analyses across tissues. Despite the widespread use of LC-MS in dermatology, full-thickness human skin remains challenging to analyse. The skin extracellular matrix (ECM) presents two major obstacles: the extensive crosslinking complicates protein extraction and the high abundance of ECM proteins can mask lower-abundance proteins, reducing identification numbers.

Resident macrophages play integral roles in maintaining tissue homeostasis and function. In the skin, prenatally seeded, specialized macrophages patrol sensory nerves and contribute to their regeneration after injury. However, mechanisms underlying the long-lasting postnatal commitment of these nerve-associated macrophages remain largely elusive.

Mutualistic endosymbiosis is a cornerstone of evolutionary innovation, enabling organisms to exploit diverse niches unavailable to individual species. However, our knowledge about the early evolutionary stage of this relationship remains limited. The association between the ciliate Tetrahymena utriculariae and its algal endosymbiont Micractinium tetrahymenae indicates an incipient stage of photoendosymbiosis.

Aim: To synthesise evidence on the impact of pre- and post-loss family support interventions on bereavement outcomes and families' perceptions of their usefulness and benefits in specialist palliative care.

Design: A rapid mixed-methods systematic review drawing on JBI and Cochrane guidance. Study quality was appraised using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool.
